"Although I would rather not have to splice wires and disassemble connectors if possible."

Changing the ballast was alot easier than it seems. The tutorial is good. Just remember to follow the steps. Make sure everything works before reassembling your bumper. Including your brights

I also siliconed the crap around the ballast to keep water out. Mine had about half a cup of H2O inside the assembly.

I ended up buying 2 ballasts from this site: D4S/D4R OEM Ballast [TYT-OEM-BLST] - $74.95 The dealerships wasted $280/ea, I found them online for $180, and this site was selling them for $75. Hopefully they will arrive by this weekend...

And hopefully they won't be made in China .... uber high probability they'd be knockoffs

I just wanted to update everyone and let them know that my problem is now solved! The tutorial actually recommended the site I bought the ballasts from. The ballasts arrived in good shape. They say they were made in Japan. The place I bought them from said they were pulled from brand new working lights.

Both headlights now stay on and work great!

At times, there are parts listed as OEM, that are definitely just knockoffs.
    Be careful out there.

I have a 2008 Package 6 Prius. The passenger side HID low beam kept going out intermittently, so I first replaced the lamp, twice, the first one I bought from an auto parts store for $85.00, when that one started doing the same thing, I bought 2 for $35.00 on Ebay, and I used 1 of them. The problem continued. I checked the repair DVD and it said if one headlight is out, it is either the HID lamp, wiring harness, or HID computer. Since I tried 2 lamps, I figured I could rule out the lamp, and the Lights went on and off repeatedly with the dip switch, so I figured I could rule out the wiring harness. the manual does not show the location of an HID computer, but it does show an HID ECU located on each headlight assembly. I removed the entire passenger side headlight assembly, and found what some people are calling a ballast, mounted to the bottom of the headlight assembly. On it it is printed " HID computer" I found HID computers on Ebay for over $200.00 new, and guaranteed used ones for as little as $40.00, with free shipping. I ordered the $40.00 one, and installed it leaving the last lamp I tried. I worked, but the lamp was not as bright as the other side, so I put the second lamp of the pair I got from Ebay, and it works perfectly. I think when the HID computer is bad, it must damage the lamp, So if you replace the HID computer, or ECU or Ballast (whatever you want to call it) replace the lamp too. I don't believe you need the Phillips lamp, as my cheap, new Ebay replacement works perfectly with my cheap, used Ebay replacement HID computer.

    Repair guy.
Please let us know how your knockoff ballast and light combo works.

Check back occasionally to let is know whether it is still in service. Maybe every 6 months or so?
The community would really appreciate it.

I went through this as well on the driver's side. I replaced the ballast and then the same thing happened some months later. When I did the retrofit to projectors, I thought that I will be rid of the issue with the new setup. But it happened again on the driver's side. So I added another ground cable to the ballast and it hasn't happened since. It ended up being the ground wire...
