I need a dashboard cam that has great quality recording capabilities that can see license plates of other cars 1-3 cars away no matter the speed I am going at, can be easily removed and inserted back on, and will last me a long time. Price isn't a concern but I won't pay a lot of money for a mediocre cam. Also I read somewhere that some cameras can disrupt sensors, radio, and other electronics. Is this true?

I hear on the news and reddit of stories about hit and runs or people lying and blaming the victims but with a good quality camera that'll make feel comfortable sharing the road with these crazy drivers.

That's hard wired to your car? Can you take the camera out if you wanted to so no one sees it and break into the car to steal it? I am planning on getting this cam right here:

I am super amazed by the high quality videos of the camera in that link in action on youtube and can't wait to get that dashboard cam but I heard it won't work at intended cause certain things if I want to hard wire it. Looks like I'll just put the wires in a way where it is camouflaged on the edge of the car where it is also black. I am just curious how non hard wired cams look when doing this and with the camera mounted and with it taken out. I'll be using the suction thing to hold the camera in place and when I leave my car I'll take the camera in my pocket and put the suction in the glove box but the wire will probably still hang out and the thing to the 12v outlet will still be there.

Edit...I am not sure why I can't post the link but the camera I am referring to is the
    DOD TECH LS460W

The camera is "plugged-in" and can be easily removed. The wire running from the dome light just keeps everything neater looking.

Ok I finally stopped being lazy and ordered my dashcam, the DOD Tech LS460W and I got it today but I won't get it hardwired, at least not yet. Is it safe to tuck the cord under the top of the windshield all the way to underneath airbag cover like this?

If that's not safe, to tuck the cord under the airbag cover, how about the putting the cord on black outlining of the windshield that's just right next to the airbag cover but not underneath it?

How do you run your wire from the dome light? Can you post a pic please?

so do you tap directly into the wiring of the dome light under the headliner?

My guy at the stereo shop did the deed. I left it up to him, and don't know the details. Liked it so much that I did the same thing to my hybrid Avalon.

Do you have the name of that shop so that I can look it up? I might give that dashcam set up a try once I get my car..

Yes. Tapped into a power source that is available only when the car is "on". The camera loops (4 or 5 hours I think) on the SD card and "saves" 5 minute blocks when it "feels" bumps.

I just installed the Black Box B40-C dashcam with GPS. It was $79 on Amazon Prime. I used the 12-foot cig-lighter adapter and ran the wire under the trim and to the accessory plug in the back seat. As part of my electrical system expansion project I plan to wire it to a fuse inside the passenger compartment. I am really satisfied with the quality and the very small size.

Here's a photo of my installation of the Black Box camera. You can see the miniature screen and the green power on indicator light at the top. The GPS antenna is mounted on the other side of the mirror. The camera is easily removable as it slides into a simple bracket that is stuck to the windshield using 3M tape. I positioned the camera so the lens is just below the sunshade portion of the windshield. From outside, the camera is barely visible.

EDIT: Originally I installed the camera behind the mirror, but moved it to it's present location because I wanted to see the indicator lights and screen and have easy access to the buttons. I can reach up and turn the mic off and on, mark a section of the recording to save, turn the camera off, etc.

I do not think that we need an additional cameras. Every Prii with Safety Sense P has front camera installed. The question is how to get access to the real time footage. Same apples for rear camera.
I think it just a meter of time than system will be hacked.

I doubt that those cameras, regardless of any hacking, will suffice for dash cam duty. Dashcams have specific capabilities and interface features, including the lens, coordination with gps location, ability to cycle, ability to save crash data, etc.

In addition to what dashcam can do the embedded cams could record video and all car system parameters: speed, tires pressies, TSS-P operations, parking proximity sensors data, etc..., you name it. It is like to have a 'black box' on-board. To have access to internal log file may be of a great support to traffic accidents investigations and to low insurance rates.
