I awards and bragging rights wasn't a Toyota concern.

Engineering achievement is acknowledged, but flaunted to the point of exploitation and hype as with some other automakers.

For example, the thermal-efficiency of the Prius engine is an industry top-achievement. Yet, it is simply just presented as an improvement point for the new generation.

Let's see how that sales metric pans out for the Mirai...then give awards. Maybe this particular award is a misprint...they left off the 'washing' after the 'green'?

Toyota’s new hydrogen-powered car is driven for 16 hours a day for 107 days in a demanding road test in Germany

Interesting but...... "*Automotive World is not responsible for the content of this news release."

Yay! one car on one trip! it's a start. I guess. Damn Europeans always ahead of us here in 'merica. What I don't get is...oh...nevermind...March 31st is so close now. No need to waste time with FCV anymore.

    that wasn't much of a limb .... your forecast was a day late and a dollar short;
It was the model S - been there, done that.

They Drove A Tesla From LA To New York In A Record 58 Hours 55 Minutes

It took a few days doing it deliberately without superchargers and just hours with superchargers.
The European trip was accomplished always making sure that they were always on the planned route that had hydrogen stations. Heck, they could have gone more places by having a diesel truck tanker following behind them
    ;)
With electrics, especially here in the US - driving a specific route is not necessary because infrastructure already provides multiple routes. Hydrogen will require a trillion-dollar taxpayer paid expense in the U. S. . The oil companies, that Supply the natural gas for the hydrogen, refused to pay that kind of expense, even though it's their product that will bring in profit. So Toyota lobbies for overburdened taxpayers to take the financial hit. Maybe that works for some people ... I know it works for Toyota.

Yep, been following that. Wanted to make a point that the Model 3 (not even released!), has a better chance crossing the US of A before ANYTHING hydrogen. Well, maybe that flat-bed truck CARRYING the silly fuel...

It seems current owners of Tesla will be able to purchase the 3 before anyone else. So if you don't have one, your in for a long wait.

Model 3 deposits will start thursday for the entire US. Deliveries will be between 2017-2018 depending on location and equipment. Details should be available Thursday. I expect tens of thousands of orders before the end of april. Mirai is available for about 3000 in limited areas of california for those that never intend to leave the state, through the end of 2017. I expect some mirai preorders to cancel for the model 3, but we should know more.

If you live in a state like texas like I do, toyota is asking for your tax money, but won't have a fcv available in state for over a decade if ever. Tesla is building real cars and a charging network. Instead of the mirai breaking out in 2018, I expect that the prius prime, and tesla model 3, bmw 330e, a3-etron, etc will keep its demand extremely low no matter what gas prices do.

That's a long wait for the 3. Is 2017/18 deliveries or production?

First deliveries will begin in 2017. These will probably only be loaded (expensive and optioned out) models. We should know a lot more on april 1, when the more basic and affordable versions are out, which will depend on demand. I'm expecting that I can get one optioned the way I want it in mid 2018;-)

Excess geothermal - producing more electricity than some of the cold European countries can even use, makes a great way to store the excess via hydrogen. That, and ever increasing battery storage, for their growing ev population.

I believe Norway is one of the countries also looking into thorium reactors.

They have said production begins in late 2017. Musk just said "in about 2 years" and this is March, 2016. Then, of course, they are known for missing schedules and having very slow production ramps. Maybe all of that is history and this time things will be different but they are still a small company with limited resources.

Yes they may be late. I expect deliveries in california will happen right after production ;-) there is no reason to hold cars, they will have a press conference even if it is only 6 like the X. I think they have stuff together for the summer of next year, but engineering is on-going, so delays can happen. Musk said in about 2 years in sept, 2015, which would be sept 2017 with october deliveries if no slips. Tesla has not worked steel before, but that should be easier than aluminum. There is no techical gotcha like the gull wing doors that delayed the X, or the lack of funds that delayed the S. The gigafactory is a gating item on high volume, but even if its behind it won't delay a roll out of low volume.

My guess is if you want delivery outside of california, unless you are a model S or X owner that is 2018.
Meanwhile, Toyota has two test cars available to journalists at the event, and we took a quick drive in the car that indeed feels like the future.

Mirai’s dimensions will be familiar to U.S. consumers because it’s just a shade (1.5 inches) longer than a Camry while sharing the same size wheelbase and width to a few tenths of an inch. Getting inside the car, we felt comfortable and had the room to get situated. The car’s interior has a premium feeling, which, for a model retailing at $57,500 pre-incentives, is something of a mandatory requirement. SofTex does some of the heavy lifting here.[/quote]

Wired a while ago said the mirai looks like people thought the future would look like in the 1970s.

I don't know but the dash of the mirai looks dated compared to the much less expensive prius prime. Softex may be a good substitute for toyota leather, but its nowhere near as nice as lexus leather, and at the price ....

The exterior does look like some kind of distopian future, where the government selects artists, and a 7 year old picks the pretiest design. OK maybe not quite that bad, but those gills, air to water doesn't look like any future I want to live in.
