Nice article but it assumes the dealer has some gas models to sell. A Tesla dealership would not unless there were some 'trade-in' hanging around waiting to go to auction.

Well then it is a company store ;-) That is what the dealers are fighting. If it was an independant dealership, it would likely take on a gasoline line too. We have a couple of billionaire's that own multiple toyota dealerships in texas, that are fighting the company store, they would easily like to manipulate a tesla independant dealer. They like selling gasoline powered cars. You couldn't really run a tesla dealership profitably if you didn't sell more cars than tesla does and compete with ordering on-line ;-) We will see if tesla is forced to do a quasi independant dealership in some states, but my guess is they will just direct people to order on line. Hell if they can sell $4B worth of cars on-line site unseen (pre deposits before the reveal) I don't think they need a dealer talking people out of going electric.

From what we have seen, the Model 3 is extremely competitive with other $35k cars, without the tax credit.
Sure, it is nice to get, but it is not a deal breaker for us.

That said, I doubt anyone reserving one after today will get the full amount.
As they are up over 180k reservations worldwide, it is probably too late now.

So if the $7500l tax credit was really important to you, I take it you already have your reservation?

So will reservations go on Ebay with a price between $1,000-8,500 ?

I don't know if you can sell them. I put down 2 deposits, because I knew friends would want them once the anouncement was made and car was out. interest rates are low, so over 2 years I'm not losing much.

I'm willing to take features I don't really want to get the tax credit. Really $10K more for 100 mile extra range if I get back $7500 from the government sounds like a really good deal. I'm not ready for a signature loaded model though.

The Model 3 is not a hatchback.

Folks needing hatchback storage accessibility will have to go with the Bolt EV or wait for future cars like, perhaps, the Model Y.

I am pretty sure by 2020 there will be a CUV based on the model 3 if it works out. Seriously buy a used pick up, rav4, or prius if you only occasionally need that cargo capability ;-) I'm getting used to the idea that I keep my prius, or buy an old pick up, as my dog likes to get messy, and I think I want to keep the tesla pristine, if elon lets me buy it.

Every car company except Nissan and Tesla are going to ship cars with CCS DC charging to North America. Hyundai will reportedly support CCS on the ~110 mile Ioniq EV late this year. Several 200+ mile CCS cars will be arriving from BMW, Mercedes, and VW group brands starting in 2018, I think. They will all be CCS and will likely support "100 kW" 200A (~70 kW peak, in reality) charging stations for faster road trip charging. I think it's likely that the Bolt EV will support faster than 50 kW charging at those stations as well when the final specs are announced later this year.

Quite soon there will also be support for "150 kW" 350A cars and stations that are backward compatible with older charging stations and cars.

So, GM could continue their path of refusing to lift even their pinkie finger to install CCS chargers and they will still be installed by other car companies. Once substantial numbers of road-trip capable CCS cars are on the road then other charging station companies and destination sites like motels will soon follow along interstate routes.

Thanks, that may change my mind. Everyone talking about it last night seemed to assume it was a hatchback due to the roofline. That's the first picture I've seen of the back being opened. There's still talk of a X-type variant, so maybe it could appear sooner, rather than later. Not holding my breath though.

Yes, it will get built, but the fewer big parties involved, more haphazard the expansion could be. The supercharger network was laid out for the nation. With less central planning for other networks, the when of them meeting a particular trip route is up in the air. A Bolt could do a long range trip, but when that is possible on fast DC network for an individual isn't open info. So if that is what you want from a 200+ mile BEV when you get it, Tesla is the best bet.

When I saw that video, I thought to myself that's a major strike off my personal shopping list. I use a hatch a lot and will again this weekend when I head to the local home store for a bunch of yard supplies and stones. My former 06 Camry hybrid was probably the last sedan I buy.

Anyway, I hope this announcement will help prospective Bolt shoppers if GM responds with either some or all of the following: lower pricing, adding more features to the base model, tweaks to the drivetrain, etc. Competition is good!

It sounds pretty promising. With the large broad early interest, I wouldn't be surprised if the feds disqualify it for any tax credit/break. I thought hard about plunking down $1k last night but realistically I wouldn't expect to get it until mid 2018.

I like a lot about it minus the non-integrated dashboard tablet and the ginormous windshield which presumably allows excess glare, heat, and IR into the car especially in sunny, desert-like climates.

Absolutely there are ccs stations being built. They are not laid out like the super charger network though. It will take time. Tesla should be able to use any of the combo plugs with an adapter, so that is good not bad for tesla owners.
I think porsche is pusing a 300 kw system. They should build a few to test it out.

you can see combo is mainly a west coast east coast thing, which may be fine

tesla is laid out more for trips, covers the country, and has ore chargers per station so that multiple cars can fill at once.

Absolutely and they probably will be filled in well for west coast trips. Tesla will get those all over the country as they roughly double the number of chargers in the next couple of years. There will be fewer ccs doing long trips though, so less chance of seeing anouther trying to charge.

One tesla forum thread I was directed to said the X pano-windshield was $4k to replace......

    absolutely true.

I think that dash tablet is pretty cool, and probably cuts down on costs. It would be great if it had heads up display so you didn't have to glance over.

I doubt the pano will have more glare than the prius glass. It probably will require more airconditioning but ... that's why the car has a big battery.

Yep insurance will be more for a model 3 than a lot of ice cars, but that what it is, insurance. I used insurance for my much less expensive prius windows. Its a pretty cool pano. I

Yeah, definitely get the glass breakage rider! LOL I would think simply based on economies of scale due to more sales and a smaller overall size, the 3 shouldn't cost as much as the X glass. Musk says avg. sale price will be $42k. At the time of this post, 200,000 reservations have been made. So it could be said that in approximately one day, Tesla has "sold" more than $8.4 BILLION in cars.

Some sedans have the ability to fold down the rear seats to handle long loads like fishing poles and skis. I wonder if the Model 3 does?

Musk said at the reveal it would accept a 7ft surfboard but didn't elaborate how. The full 22min. reveal is available on youtube.

I saw that but it still doesn't address how. I can put a 7ft piece of lumber in our 2003 Prius that does not fold down the rear seats. But the European version of the Gen-1 has the ability to fold down at least one of the rear seat backs to include the trunk space.
