What is Toyota's response to the Model 3?

My wife reserved a model 3. I love how there's autopilot standard and that you can get more than 215 miles on a charge with the upgraded battery. I paid for the $1,000 reservation because it's refundable and I probably won't get the car until the beginning of 2018 without one.

 

FYI, according to articles I've read,only the hardware is standard. You'll still have to pay extra for the auto pilot software.

 

Made me look ! Haven't sat in the back of the Mirai since the test drive in July. I'm 5'9" and my shoes are about 11" long and I can put them under the seat far enough such that I have about 3-4" behind the heel. There is a rise under the seat but I can lift the front of my feet and slide them a bit further in. The inside of the Mirai is bigger than the Prius. As far as my shin and knees go, neither touch the back of the seat, even when the seat is slid back ( the seat moves forward to your setting automatically when you turn the power button on (I'm refraining from calling it the ignition ;-) )). I'd say the rear foot room is reasonably comfortable. I don't plan on spending much time in the back seat though. I'll have to compare it to my Prius when I have them together. I've done some long haul driving already with it and the front is sure comfy !

 

Maybe you need to go sit in one?!

 

With the exception of safety aspects of autopilot. Such as automatic emergency breaking. Not sure exactly where the line will be drawn, it may also include lane keeping warning.

 

Small compared to what, a Maybach? It is a well sized car and is as large as most cars today need to be.

So - yea, you can spend way more, get way less interior room, get teeny weeny fueling infrastructure ($15/ liter per 100miles), or, buy a U. S. made plugin that won't have to depend on fossil fuel as the cheapest source of power. Decisions decisions.

You're assuming i haven't? At 6 feet 5 inches it was a tight fit - even for a car with only four seats

Alfa Romeo 4C doesn't have power steering. Some prefer the feel without any assist system between them and the road on their high performance car.

Hill posted the EPA entry. It could simply be a subcompact because the trunk is small. Or because Toyota hasn't released any interior specs. If so they can fix that easily.

 

The exterior dimension is comparable to a midsize car but the interior room is small. The second hydrogen tank is under the front seat so there's absolutely no room to extend your feet out under the front seat like other cars.

The need to slip your feet under the front seat is a sign of a small interior. I was able to fit fine in first gen xB doing so, and the same is likely true of my Sonic. The majority of typical midsize cars don't require this and crowd a rear passenger's knees with the front seat back like coach seats on an airline.

 

Yeah, I might slip my feet under in my parents Accord Crosstour, and I'm simply don't notice because the front seat back isn't crowding my knees like it is OldNSlow's photos.

So, too clarify. Small interior cars require the rear passenger to do some twisting and folding in order to get their feet under the front seat, which is the only place for them. With a larger interior, a rear passenger might put their feet under the front seat, but this could be due to them stretching out, or an inconsiderate front passenger. The photos of the Mirai look more like the former.

I think Toyota not releasing any interior measurements is more telling than what the EPA might label the car.

 

When the Corvair first came out, there were aftermarket companies that sold grills for them, so they would look like "normal" cars.

Agreed - but the remember that in the photos the car was turned off and the driver seat was in its rearmost position - I still could fit my fist (four fingers) between my knee and the seatback (I'm 5'9"). With a driver up front and the car turned on the drivers seat moves forward giving even more room in the rear. As an extreme comparison the Lexus LS long wheel base gives me 11 inches behind the heel when fully stretched out. Doesn't get much better than that ;-) Hill needs a driver and that car )
