Why I won't buy a Tesla Model 3

    Supercharger density will double by the end of 2017 (assuming all goes well), though that will likely only continue to be in certain metro areas and along interstates.
    Yes (caveat being without technological breakthroughs to make it feasible; the renewable production methods are too costly as are the stations).

    The repairs have all been quickly and conveniently taken care of by Tesla. Getting an oil change has been more inconvenient than the repairs.
    Second, almost all of the repairs are for annoyances, rather than "leave you stranded at the side of the road" issues.
    Third, the experience of driving a Model S is magnitudes ahead of any ICE vehicle, so most all view the great experience outweighing the minor issues.

    Right, not vapor ware, built by the worlds leading car company, not some PayPal bailout.

    If you need a small sedan, great, most do, the Corolla sells great, 12,000$ proven, dependable, won't brick, doesn't need a 35,000 battery in three years, but isn't yet getting 50 mpgs, soon

    Me too. We couldn't get a number out of Doug, no matter how many drinks we gave him (j/k about the drinks part. But we did ask him and he said "it'll be priced aggressively").

    Edit: I made a post in the thread "Prime Premium" about what the top model Prime will cost. A 2016 Prius Four AT/PC costs $32,290. The Model 3 is $35,000. The top Prime will have to be between those two otherwise it's the 1G PiP vs. 1G Volt discussion all over again and most people chose base Volt over a PiP Advanced.

    Only Toyota will know how competitive the price will be. Never equal or lower than their first Gen PiP.

    BEVs are fundamentally inferior devices with today's batteries.

    To put it in BEV terms, a Prius has a 160kWh battery (twice that of a Model S) that also produces heat for free, can be refueled at a rate of 5,000kW (40 times faster than a supercharger) at 168,000 stations across the US (275 times more than there are supercharger stations), costs less than $20/kWh (1/5th as much as a Tesla battery), and has an energy density of around 600Wh/kg (three times as much as a Tesla battery).

    The Prius did not have these fundamental limitations compared to competing technology when it was introduced.

    Unless batteries improve by a heck of a lot more than the gigafactory will manage, this will be a substantial problem for the foreseeable future, which is why I don't support BEVs as a replacement for gasoline-driven cars and diesel-driven trucks.

    I'm very interested in how aggressive the Prime looks, but the C-HR looks interesting as well. Just looks goofy.

    @el Crucero NAILED IT

    I have to chime in here:
    I just sold my 2012 Prius that I gave my wife 2 yrs ago when I bought a Model S. Tesla Just delivered my wife's Model X. I'm a HEAVY Tesla KoolAid drinker.
    Here's my advice to anyone that doubts that Tesla makes the most compelling incredible car ever. Just take a test drive. If you are in the LA area, PM me I will be happy to take you on one. Your mind will be BLOWN.
    You can even forget the fact that it's an EV. That's just a side benefit (you know saving the world) the car, the service, the Tesla plan IS the future.
    There's nothing even close and now that they will have a modestly priced car coming down the pipe, you should consider a deposit.

    PROBABLY? You don't know, do you. That is not the case in California. Colorado is way behind the curve on environmental issues. AND......I have SolarCity panels on my roof, so I am essentially off the grid. I produce more electricity than I use even when charging my PIP or my T3 in the future.

    You're missing the point. Doesn't matter if it's the greatest car in the universe if it won't do the job. I went on a 300 mile round trip just last weekend, partly in a blizzard, no time or place to charge at any point along the trip.

    You'd rather be stuck along the side of the road with 70-100 miles to go in a Tesla than making it to your destination in a regular car and spending 3 minutes filling up?

    Colorado has one of the highest penetrations of wind energy in the country. About 3000MW on an 8000MW grid.

    California imports a lot of hydro power from the North West and burns a lot of gas. But guess what? The Western half of the US is all one grid (usually called the Western interconnect) so the mix in CA is effectively the same as it is in CO.

    It took me till just about half a year ago before I had finally jumped on the Hybrid train...which feels like it never got started with so few of them on the road (barely see them in Texas), and now the EV revolution is starting to kick off...I already feel woefully behind on the times :p

    It'll probably be another decade before I consider an EV, hopefully Tesla is still around by that time, maybe then EV's will finally be a viable option for us unwashed masses looking for a cheap reliable ride.

    I maintain you are the one missing the point. A blizzard in late March? These kinds of weather anomalies are becoming more commonplace. 99% of scientists say these anomalies are related to extremely high carbon emissions causing global warming. ICE vehicles are a significant contributor to these carbon emissions.

    If you are stuck beside the road in a Tesla, it shows poor planning on your part, the weather is immaterial. There will be about 15,000 destination chargers in the US by the end of 2017 along with about 500 Superchargers. No location will be more than 300 miles without an opportunity to recharge. It will take about 20 minutes to charge for 100 miles at a Supercharger and about 3 hours at a destination charger.

    So yeah, go ahead and spend 3 minutes to fill up your ICE car and let your (and my) grandchildren worry about the consequences of your decision.

    You are welcome to your own opinion.
    To me, BEVs are fundamentally superior devices with today's batteries.
    They have replaced my airline miles, and added an amazing amount of convenience and piece of mind to my life.

    You are not, however, welcome to make up your own facts.
    The heat in your Prius is not "free".
    It comes from that heater under your hood. About 60% of the work done by your engine goes to create heat. This happens regardless of if you want heat or not.
    EVs create the heat (and take the efficiency hit) only when you want it.

    But what if my family and I are in a rush.... and we're waiting in line to charge our Model 3 while your shopping or eating with no sign of you coming back to your Tesla which is also charging anytime soon? This is the what people will realize ....when its too late of course.
