Gas pump constantly shuts off when filling up my 2012 Prius THREE

Our 2012 prius THREE is a huge hassle to refuel because the auto shutoff on any gas pump is triggered repeatedly regardless of how much fuel is in the car. This happens anywhere I fill up and the only way to get gas in is by slowing the flow to a trickle and restarting the pump each time it shuts off (perhaps 30 times per refueling).

The dealer says it requires a complete replacement of the tank (~$1,100), but I'm still not clear on what's causing the problem. The problem is maddening enough that I might be willing to shell out the $$ if I knew this was the problem and there was no other fix.

Please share related insights and insights if you have some.
    Thanks!

There are some mechanical explanations somewhere here.
One thing to try is rotating the nozzle to the upside down position.
What state? A few states with stringent VOC have "accordian" pumps that need inserted enough.

It's got 85K miles. I've owned it for just the last 2.5 years. Problem is worst when it's cold but has gotten gradually gotten worse in all temps. First owner drove lots of miles on a gravel road, so I wonder if if dust and dirt are a factor somehow...

Thanks for the suggestion I'll give that a try. I'm in Wisconsin - nothing fancy on the pumps here.

There is a vent to let the air escape the tank as it fills with gas. It is usually a line that runs to the engine. Maybe your vent or the line is stopped up. i have seen this explained on the Internet but don't remember the specifics.

I usually try to pull the fuel filler spout out as far as possible, only inserting the minimum amount into the Prius filler neck...

some say it helps to open the gas cap and let it breathe for a minute.

I had the same problem with a different model car. Couple of things you can try before shelling out $$$$$$$:
    1. Sounds like the line that vents to the evap canister could be plugged ( could be by dirt or spider webs!) I actually traced the line to the evap canister and disconnected it and shot some air through it to back clean it.
    2. The evap canister may be plugged itself. Look on you tube for testing procedure( some easy tests for this)!
Look, I'm no pro on Prius models but this worked on another car!
    Good luck,
    Seth

Here is how a nozzle works

If your tank is not filled when the nozzle stops, then you must have some kind of obstruction, causing the level of gas in the tube in your car to a have a level that rises up the the nozzle.

If you do not want to remove the obstruction, then perhaps you could just reduce the flow rate, so that the gas level in the tube portion of your car would have time to drain out into the tank, avoiding having gasoline rise up to the nozzle, triggering the nozzle shutoff valve.

...also the idea of upside down nozzle changes the location of the little holes at the bottom of the nozzle

My 2010 is doing this now. Takes about 15 minutes to get 8 gal of gas in.
Is definitely worse when the temp drops below freezing.
Anyone gather an answer as to what was the cause?

sounds like the vent line or evap canister, according to post #9. too bad the o/p didn't return.

It's definitely not a normal thing, like the second gen with bladder tank. I've never notice a problem. If it persists yeah could be something as bisco said, needs checking out.

Just for giggles: you're not by chance using the same pump all the time, or this is a one-time thing so far? Pumps can have a defective nozzle.

Several different pumps. This has been going on for awhile.

Happened on my Camry years ago. It was the evaporative canister which was kind of an expensive repair. But, as someone said earlier, it might just be the line to the canister is plugged.

Why don't u take a soft metal brush hose type and give a round edge cleaning before spending huge $$$.

I have a memory of the evaporation canister being the subject of a recall notice on these cars. Can anyone be more sure?

I've had the same problem, but only at particular pumps (California). What I've done is rotate the nozzle 90 degrees which usually fixes the problem.

I always use pump fuel on slowest position .....doing this take little more time but it keeps dirt and water in fuel filter inside fuel pump station and once it turn of there is no need to keep filling it is full
