Greetings -- just got a Prius (Package #4) 2 weeks ago tomorrow... still learning how to drive it! FOR sure!!

Did a little experiment, and wasn't really happy with the results, and can find nothing in the owner's manual that talks about this...

My son got into the car, I've got my fob in my pocket standing outside the car... he starts the car, drives away, and continues to drive away. He went all around the block and then came back to where I was standing on the curb. He said it beeped at him and said that key was not present (or something to that effect).

So, makes me wonder, if someone was to jump you as you opened the car door, they could start the car and drive away (without the key/fob), and disappear your car to a chop shop. Isn't there a way to disable the engines after the fob is not present in the car for a certain distance/length of time?

If not, there surely should be!!

    DK

Well, you could just disable the SKS, with that switch under the steering column.

You could also put in a customized "kill switch" that prevents the car from starting... not sure exactly how it would work in a Prius, but i helped one of my housemates put one in his 10 year old car and it wasn't too difficult. We even made it magnetically activated instead of a switch, so you don't even know it's there... you just have to rub a magnet over a certain part of the dash to trigger it.

This was done, of course, a few weeks after the car was stolen and then found by the cops. about a year later he took it out to fix some soddering, and sure enough that same night the car was stolen again... he put it back in when the cops found it, again.

At least they can not restart the car without ur fob. I think this is by design to do so. Let say ur fob is out of battery while u r driving on the highway. you don't want ur engine to shut off right? i m sure you don't want to look for the fob in ur pocket and stick it in the slot while u r doing 70mph.

you'd have to be really close to the door. so if someone tries to get in your car, just run away before they can try to start it ;)

To make matters even worse, the RFID in your fob can be copied by various techniques that can be done from a few feet away from you. So then they can change the RFID on a CD or a book into your FOB's RFID and have your car without you even being around. Sort of like a free key copying service for the thief for any car anywhere (but in this case only for Prius). :(

If you had a regular car with a regular key and someone was to jump you as you opened the door, they could use your key to start the car and drive away.

Jumping you is the hard part. Taking the key out of your hand is the easy part.

u can drive on without the key once the car is started, but once u shut it off, the car wont turn on unless u have the key
last time my mom drove it from work back w/o a key, n ask me to get the key for her when she came back to the garage

I conducted a simple test with my car. Each car may behave somewhat differently, but, here is what I found:
Holding the fob out the drivers window more than about 2 inches, I was unable to start the car. At about 2 inches beyond the window frame the car would start. It was very repeatable.

For me this is a non-issue. Try it yourself.

I on day 15 of my Prius ( Silver package #7)so still in learning mode.
If a car is being driven off with out the "SKS" inside, can the door lock button on the "SKS" fob be pressed while the car is still in range and will this lock the doors and stop the engine? Or is this feature only enabled when the car is not running?

As I understand your scenario: someone drives off in your Prius (with or without your consent) without the fob being present; you want to lock the doors and stop the engine? You can't start/stop the engine with any buttons on the fob; the fob carries a coded circuit that interfaces with the computer in your Prius. Once the computer recognizes the fob code, it will permit you to start the engine by pressing the big round Power (or Start) button on the dash. Not only that, each of the two fobs you got with the car has a different code, and both codes are loaded into the computer database. If you order a third fob, the dealer will need all three fobs present before he can enter the third fob's code into the Prius computer ( I have no idea why). The range for locking/unlocking your doors with the fob is about 30-50 feet.

If your Prius is being driven off without the fob, you could lock or unlock the doors before the car moved 50 feet or so, but you couldn't shut off the engine.

I was under the impression that the ECU stops responding to the FOB button presses once the car is in READY mode. (Other modes, too?) Additionally, I don't think it checks for the SKS fob once the car is in READY except when certain events happen (e.g. open/close front doors or the hatch).

    Someone correct me?

You should always turn off your car and lock it as soon as you get out of
the car. If somebody car jack you, just run! Why would somebody want
a prius when they can get an SUV with more muscle for a quick get away.

I have X-JACK installed. The local law enforcement may help finding it
    quicker.

    You mean LoJack, right?

X-Jack is for computers -- more specifically for the dial-up modem.
