Griping About Gas Prices ... in a New SUV

Crisis? What crisis? Fuel use rises, Escalade sales soar.

    By Keith NaughtonNewsweek

May 22, 2006 issue - With all the histrionics about rising gas prices coming out of Washington these days, SUVs must be an endangered species in our nation's capital, right? Well, not exactly. At Capitol Cadillac, just inside the Beltway, SUVs are flying off the lot. Last week, former White House chief of staff Andy Card dropped by to pick up a new SRX, Caddy's midsize SUV, says dealer Daniel Jobe. But Jobe's hottest seller, by far, is the newly redesigned chrome-encrusted Cadillac Escalade, an incredible hulk that gets 13mpg in the city. "My biggest problem is not gas prices," says Jobe, "it's getting enough of these trucks."

I honestly think there is a sense of "let's party before its all over" fatality mentality out there.

Maybe one more cat 4 or 5 slamming into the Gulf coast will help people get a clue. About a lot of things.

I'm not holding my breath though.

"The new CW: "Prices have to get to $4 and maybe even higher—and stay there for at least a year—before we'll see a substantial shift in what we drive," says J.D. Power's Tom Libby."

Sounds good to me! I have ABSOLUTELY no problem with gas prices going over $4... Infact, I'd like to see it happen because:

    a) I can afford it

    and

    B) People driving guzzlers will whine more and more :p

despite all of this, am I the only one who is absolutely scared sh*tless about peak oil... I dont want to starve to death in 15-25 years... Im only 23 now, so I really have a great life to look forward to as civilization collapses in my lifetime...

We can get through peak oil though if our nation would do what it takes now, but I know that wont happen with this administration or the next, regardless of which part wins in 2008, all of the current candidates on either side wont do squat...

But mabye by 2012 or 2016 things will get bad enugh for goverment to take charge, mandate detroit raise the minimum fuel standard to 40 or 50 MPG, start stockpiling mass quanties of oil so the US will be better prepared than europe or china/india regardless of cost, and mandate wind and solar energies before we run out of oil and cannot produce the equipment for such technologies... sigh

either way, I have come to accept that I wont be living my current lifestyle in 30 years but I would live to atleast not starve to death, I can survive in a semi-agrarian society but id rather not live in the terminator/mad max future... anyone else agree/disagree?

In New York where I happen to be a prep manager for a local Cadillac dealer, Escalades are NOT flying off the lot. In fact, we've only delivered two so far this month. And yes I'll be driving a Prius in a few more weeks.

P.S. the last Escalade I drove for a weekend actually only got 11.6 on the highway!

Hmm, Cadillac Escalade is MSRP $53850 before government subsidies, dealer rebates and incentives. Top-of-the-line Prius is ~ $29K out the door.

The difference of ~ $24,000 buys me 13 years of gas, or 390K miles, for my Prius without even considering TCO.

You're never make back the hybrid premium buying an Escalade.

I get more people asking about the Prius these days. Some of them are looking for as little as the 10+mpg that they might get with this car over what they have.

Man, I am sick of hearing this BS.

    From consumer reports:

Yes, disclaimer is the tax credit bit, but I got mine, so there ya go. Even if I didn't get the credit, I've not once seen any article (or heard any person) detail how they come up with this $3000 premium figure. Not that I've gone looking for it, but if its gonna be throw into every hybrid article, ya think somone would take the time to back that figure up.

Even CR screwed this up. Their print article claimed that no hybrid recaptured the infamous premium. Next issue, they briefly mentioned their mistake, providing details only online, and only after digging around for it.

    Sorry. End of rant.

I think you're giving people a lot more credit than they deserve. The average person out there is probably a lot less informed than you think they are.

Good points all around and ones that I would say MOST of us agree with.

Most of what our politicans do these days do NOT pass the logic test. For example...dwindling oil reserves, high gas prices, etc...but the government does not mandate MUCH higher CAFE standards for cars and light trucks. And if they do, it's only a few MPG and it takes effect five years from now. I don't get it.

Second, 300 billion dollar deficit, but our politicians just passed a 70 billion tax cut. Don't get it.

I hope that the changes we want, happen much faster and we don't have to wait until 2012 or 2016. Hopefully in 2008, we'll get a president who will make sweeping changes to our country and like FDR, do it in the first 100 days.

You're worrying about this way too much. Peak oil isn't going to cause any problems that can't be solved by simply wiping 80% of the population off the face of the earth. Just keep enough of China around to keep Wal-Mart's shelves filled with cheap crap, and enough of India to staff our call centers.
