Well since my TDI was the only one I've ever had issues that had to be addressed, for time being I will take your word for it (as you stated) because it would require more effort than I care to waste just to debate the issue...but...an engine does not need an EGR system to work.

So fourth gen has both increased EGR, and by taking the gasses from further along the exhaust circuit, lessened the likelihood of clogging. Accordingly it'd seem they're aware 3rd gen is problematic.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was something like a PCV valve. But the cooler component, with all it's coolant hose connections and buried, and not cheap: it's a mess.

Actually the only thing I admitted to was the inability to write code, the need to find who has or can for this purpose and the need for it on Prius...thus far.

Out of respect to the others, if you want to continue this "discussion", bring it on in FHoP.

Well, we both have 2010 Prius, it may be that we will be both reporting EGR problem in the near future, I'm looking forward to your "EGR delete" solution, after all you are an aviation engineer and you know what you are doing.

A fouled or failed EGR valve is not the same as a bad valve, bad cooler, bad cooler butterfly valve, 2 leaking high temp pipes, associated gaskets, seals and compound, failed vacuum lines, expensive hardware, anti seize, cleaning one of the worst examples of intake manifold fouling I've ever seen, plus 2 days of labor on my days off...just to have the system fail again in 40K-60K miles. The results from the delete I performed on the VW were excellent, the engine never ran better and on top of that the system would never fail again.

If needed, I could do the same for any car, including the Prius. After my fortunate experience with the 2010 Prius and subsequently sale of the VW, I replaced it with...you guessed it...a 2015 Prius...and for the record our 2014 Corolla has the 1.8L engine too.

So to be clear what I stated...and I quote:

So, if my car falls within the specified VINs for this bulletin, does that mean Toyota will take care of this work under warranty (still under 36k) even if there is no CEL or problem indicated with the car?

Typically no they need to see the CEL to charge Toyota for the work. I told my coworker to report the car was knocking when cold and his dealer said you are within the TSB but with out codes we can not do anything at this time. But if your are bringing your car in for service give it a shot does not hurt to ask.

Since I had bought my new PIP out of state, I needed inspection and emissions done. I added the TSB to the work order and when they called to tell me the inspection was done they asked about the TSB and were like...huh? They didn't see a CEL and no codes stored in the ECU so they couldn't do anything. I'm a bit miffed as it is apparently a known issue affecting cars in a certain range of VINs, yet they won't do the repair unless it actually faults. At least I am now on record for asking for it so that if it ever happens after my warranty expires, I have some ammunition to get them to cover the repair.

you are confusing TSB with a recall.

So just an update to the P0401 EGR issue. I got a letter today from Toyota. They will fix vehicles with this issue no mileage limitation until March 31, 2017. I did sneak past my SMOG check but the light keeps coming on. I will contact the dealer and let them replace the valve. I was leaning toward a different brand for my next car but with this Toyota will be high on my list...

For those in need the letter is marked Warranty Enhancement Notification - ZF3
