I personally would have walked down to the DMV myself and done it all if I thought it would have actually worked and they didn't assure me they'd take care of everything (something has to be said for that "registration fee" they charge)

MikeSF - all of these posts back and forth....please see my original post!

"The BEST way to get your plate number is to go back to your dealership and convince them to run a DMV report. The day your plates are assigned they show up on that system...well before you can find them out by calling the DMV."

This is the ONLY way to get your reg/plate number early.

    Carfax will not work
    Local DMV will not work
Calling DMV number will not work.

If you do not want to wait, please, please just go to your dealer and have them run the report. You have probably had your plate assigned for a while now...it took a few weeks after I found out my plate number this way for my physical plates to arrive.

My plates took a month to come in. My HOV stickers took three weeks. I went to fast the fast trak office the Monday after I received my car, used the "new vehicle" option and everything went fine from there. The transponder permenantly resides in my glove box on the upper shelf.

Just hang in there the plates will come, but I wouldn't wait to get the HOV stickers!!

I picked up my registration and plates today, one month and 1 day after I bought my Prius, in New Jersey - still waiting for my title.

I have a friend who is a dealer, and he claims that dealers can delay sending the paperwork to DMV for most of those 90 days. So sometimes the dealer is to blame for the delays.

Why would the dealer delay? They get to use your license fee $$ for that time as "free money".

My friend claims that all dealers do this, but that has not been my experience.

Normally I wouldn't care, but this time the clock is ticking on those HOV stickers!

I could kiss you! I just tried the other methods because I thought it'd be "easier" ugh.. they took my name, said they'd run a report and even call me back, and I got my numbers and as soon as I print out a copy of the form I'm off to the post office to mail my application!

Just picked up our Prius on Friday morning (and had an awesome 400 mile trip to gold country to break her in over the weekend) and will try this method.

One question though - does the FasTrack read while it's in the top glovebox on the shelf? If so that would get that ugly transponder off the dash. =)

I called DMV number, spoke with very helpful staffer, and got my plate number about a week before plates arrived. While getting your dealer to run the DMV report is the best way, it is most certainly not the only way.
