First post on PRIUSchat! Thanks in advance for your forum which I started reading last week before becoming the owner of a 2014 PIP Advanced two days ago. I usually avoid extended warranties on everything except possibly cars and have shopped around for them afterwards and bought genuine Lexus and Honda warranties for less. The car I bought has exactly one year left of the 3yr/36K warranty and I understand you can buy the VSA as a new owner until that expires but I can't see if that transfers to a second owner. The dealership said I could get the 7 yr/100K full extended coverage at the special rate of $955 but that had to be purchased before the paperwork for the sale was submitted which is as late as tomorrow since today is a holiday. That price sounds low compared to what some have been quoted. Is the finance person lying to me about this? They certified the car so I already have a longer powertrain warranty. Based on the miles expected I know the warranty will time out before I reach 100K miles if that makes any difference. It is hard to shop this around on Memorial Day to make a decision by opening tomorrow.

Now I have to get through the 680 page manual and think about getting accessories like cargo mat, weathertech floor liners or equivalent and maybe some sharp looking lower door trim!

If you want to pay a thousand dollars for peace of mind then feel free. I own two 2012 pip advance and have not experienced one problem. One has 87k and the other 43k. Just oil changes, tire rotations, and cabin/air filter changes. I will never buy a warranty for a prius. Kind of negates low cost of ownership and reasoning for buying one of the most reliable cars you can buy.

The likely failure on the Prius cars would be on the HV battery, which the extended warranty does not cover. So I would suggest saving the $1000 and putting toward the HV battery purchase when you need it.

    I paid $1750 for 6 year 125k for my 2016 prius.
I would have been really happy if I could of gotten it for 1k, the lowest I could get it to was 1550 from another dealer with the wrong color/style prius for me.
The starting price on the warranty was 2k from 3 of the dealers within 240 miles of me.

is the warranty the extension of the Toyota warranty?

I bought a used Nissan before, I used the warranty to get a new steering wheel cover (it was stained, $1200) and a bottom door panel (it was cracked), these two items were more than I paid for the warranty.

It is likely that you can cancel the warranty and receive a percentage back if you decide you don't like it. If the PIP already has 25k miles on it then you would lose 25% of the warranty if you canceled it right away (plus cancelation fee) ask them to make sure.

    I would get it :)

(HV probably has the 100,000 mile warranty on it already, from Toyota)

If it was me I'd skip it...guess it's not Toyota Certified though? Used car you never know, but new or Certified I'd skip it.

Hey I'd be curious price I am wondering if I want to go for used Pip advance 2014 or 2015 in a year or two.

I'm not bright enuf to navigate the pros and cons, just assume the extended warranty providers are in business to make a healthy profit, stick with Toyota's warranty.

The vehicle was Toyota Certified and the warranty is the Toyota Platinum VSA warranty. After the one year of roadside assistance is up I would be adding my daughter, the primary driver, to my AAA policy anyway so that covers about $150 of the cost if I don't get it. Yes, I bought a Prius Plug in because it was so reliable so it may not make as much sense as if I bought a German car. The car went into service exactly 2 years prior to my purchase so the 12mo/12K certified warranty meant nothing but I got another year of powertrain warranty already. I was hoping not so much for a discussion about whether to buy the warranty as to whether I had to make that decision today or could I, as the second owner, get it at a later date so long as this offered price is not crazy low that I should jump on it before they change their mind.

As for wjtracy's question about price, it had very low mileage (17,300) and cost me $20,800 + $192.50 doc/temp tag +tax/registration on my own bought right from a Toyota dealer. The MSRP would have been nearly $36K. It was the advanced model but did not have the tech package that would have had an original MSRP of $2610 to include LED headlight, LCC and pre-collision. I thought I got a good deal and I got it the second day on the lot. It is a bit of a unicorn since I only saw one other PIPa in a 200 mile radius of metropolitan Chicago. Would have been easier to source on the coasts where they were mostly sold.

I just thought of another explanation. When I bought extended warranties in the past I did so mostly at competitive out of state dealerships on the phone. I now see that in an effort to reduce competition for those dollars Toyota has banned this practice. Perhaps the neighboring state dealership can't sell the warranty to an out of state buyer unless it is part of a new purchase even if i have a year to buy it from an IL dealership. I may not be able to sort that out before my current warranty option expires tomorrow morning. Everything else being equal I would rather hold off on the purchase until I see if I have any service needs under the current warranty.

FYI, Toyota no longer allows the warranties to be sold out of state.

I got my 2012 Advanced on May 4 and took the warranty. My friend had a 2006 and said that every time anything went wrong on it he had to pay $1000. It's just insurance.

This is an old conversation that I am joining...from Ontario. I agreed to purchase the 2017 Prius Advanced Technology Prius January 28 2017 and will pick up it up in two more days. I read in the forums that generally the extended warranty packages are not worth it due to the reliability of the vehicles. In fact, I chose Toyota as a previous Toyota Matrix owner, due to the reliability and was sure I would not need an extended warranty. That was until I heard from the business manager that the technology package, with all the new safety features, could go wrong before the 160,000 km and the 7 years. "You know how it goes with computers" This added a hefty 3200.00 CDN plus the sales tax of 13% for 4,160.00. I was told that the maintenance alone up to 50,000 km would cost at least 750.00 and that was covered within the warranty (then expires at 50,000 km). It is not too late for me to back out of this expense that I had not planned for (and yet did buy the rust protection due to the salt of the roads here in Ontario). I would like to hear from you SOON. Thank you.

I don't believe there's free maintenance up here. Not 100% sure of current situation though. Still, I'd say pay as you go.

Thank you, Bisco...With that experienced opinion (yes, I've read some of your other posts), I am pulling out of the extended warranty. I keep my vehicles for as long as possible so will start a fund for a battery replacement after 160,000 km. I was not informed about the potential 25,000 km maintenance potential inclusion so will check on that. I also was not aware of a "processing fee" of $399.00 that I see with tax is actually $450.87. How to get out of that?
