call acton and ask what codes they got. they have the official reader.

Is there any way that my new brakes could have caused this problem or are they unrelated?

i have no idea. i guess i would ask the tech at acton toyota that question. not the service advisor, but the woman who actually diagnosed your condition.

edit: btw, faulty brake actuators are not uncommon on these cars. especially on a high mileage 12 year old. i would ask hometown garage to install a salvage unit.
