On the glide portion the article says "On the energy screen there should not be any arrows of energy going any direction. "

No matter what I do, I can't seem to get the arrows to completely dissapear. Is it not possible for the Pulse and Glide to work onan '02 Prius?

BTW, I purchased the car two weeks ago and am on my 3rd tank. So far I'm got 48.2 and 48.1 on my first two tanks (according to the MFD). This surprises me as mostly I'm doing highway miles.

Running 42 and 40 on the tires and haven't had to use the AC much.

    green arrow - regen
    no arrow - no in/out to/from battery
yellow arrow - using battery power

However, reading the CAN messages on NHW-20 Prius, there are no such digital threshold.
The amp value is proportional to the accelerator pedal value.
So, I believe it is just difference between NHW-20 and NHW-11 display specifications.
The NHW-20 has wide "no arrow" range and NHW-11 has narrow such range.

Does anyone who has Graham's Mini-Scanner can confirm this behavior?

I do not, obviously, know about a G1b, as I have a G2. I would say this I can get no flow on the MFD but on the CAN View you rarely see "0" flow at least the amps monitor. You can get very small + and - amp values but in "glide" mode you are getting close to the values you would be getting at rest at a stop light.

Since I don't know anything about your 02, I have a new 06, three days, I'll explain what I see and what I experience. I use the ICE and EM to get up to around 40. At this point I let off the gas. I see regen - wheels > electric into battery. I press just ever so slightly on the peddle and the arrows go off - and I feel a release of the wheels from the car, it is actually coasting. No ICE, no EM, no regen. If the slope is a little down hill I gain speed or stay about the same. If it is flat, I coast a LONG ways until I get to 33 or so. Three days and I have averaged 50.1 MPG on a 15 mile commute. Haven't really tried to see if I can get max MPG, just try pulse and glide now and then. Hope with this you can find out how to kick yours into "glide". Mostly I just drive it.

Why is it better to glide and slow down than it is just to slow down via regen(green arrows)? Do you slow down faster with regen? And is that less efficient?

I think it is based on what you need to do, recharge the battery or save gas. I have areas of my commute where I use the regen (down hills after climbs) but then I have areas that are slight downhills and flats where my battery is already in a high state of charge, so I could glide and not use any gas.

I believe it is nearly impossible to get the 02 into glide mode without putting it in neutral. I could be wrong but by trying have bumped my mpg to averaging over 50.

Is it hard on the transmission or anything else to continually shift in and out of neutral?

I can glide according to the MFD if I am really paying attention and if on a flat or slight downhill stretch but it is a very concentrated effort to do so. Its much easier (and less stressful) to improve your mileage by using the consumption screen. Putting it in neutral is simply not necessary - my wife (without paying attention to any of my advice) and I have increased our fuel economy over time without any extreme measures.

We are averaging just under 1,200kms between fill-ups at the moment and with only 45 litres to fill it up, gas can continue to increase in price here in Japan before I have any complaints about the 'older' model Prius.

BUT - my wife has just decided a hatchback will make grocery shopping more convenient and we might see a 20% increase in fuel economy if I get her a new one! Now I have a real concern to deal with...
