I've looked back through the archives and have been unable to find this exact problem.

I just got my Prius a few days ago, and immediately connected my Sprint PCS Treo 650 to it & transferred the whole address book - no problem.

I thought I was golden, until I noticed that the phone would fail to connect each time I got in the car. After more troubleshooting, I discovered the only times it succeeded to connect are when I had "woken it up", so that the screen wasn't black. Black screen = failed to connect. Although, sometimes if it doesn't connect at first, and then I wake my phone up later, it connects then. But not always.

I know there is a setting to change the auto-off between 30 sec, 1 min, 2 min, etc., but obviously this won't solve the problem. I also read a post where someone said to change the Auto-answer in the Handsfree prefs from "disabled" to something else, but I tried this with no luck. Plus I really don't want the phone to auto-answer anyways.

So, I finally gave in and updated the firmware to the latest version on Palm's website. No luck. I've tried deleting and re-adding the phone since then. Still no luck.

Any ideas? I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone else complaining about this. Am I the only one?

I believe this is a problem with the 650. You have to prevent it from sleeping. Then it runs down the battery quickly.

Conventional cell phones don't have the problem. But the Treo is a bit too "smart," so it goes to sleep.

An additional note on this: the phone also freezes periodically since I've gotten the Prius. I've had it for about a week, and probably about 4 times after I've driven it, I've pulled the Treo out of my pocket to find it on the normal black screen. But nothing happens when I push any buttons. I have to pull the battery out or push the reset button.

So it seems that not only does it fail to connect if it is sleeping, but sometimes it also freezes when it fails to connect.

Obviously, keeping the phone awake all the time is not an option (I don't even know that its possible if I wanted to do it). Is there any other way to solve this? Anyone else using the Sprint Treo 650 with the '06 Prius successfully and wish to share their knowledge?

I have an 04 with no issues. Sprint Treo 650.

There's a guy at work with an '06 with a Sprint Treo 650. I'll ask him if he has any issues.

It is likely something on the Treo. You may need to run it "blank" for a while; that is, delete everything except what it comes with. It's probably one of your other applications running in the background.

I have an '06 pk7 and a Sprint Treo 650 and it works perfectly.

What firmware do you have on your Treo? To find out, go into the phone app, press the menu button, choose options, then Phone info.

Next to software it should say Treo650-1.13a-SPNT

If it says something else, you do not have the latest firmware.

You can download the software here: http://www.palm.com/us/support/downloads/t...ter/sprint.html

When he did the firmware update it would have deleted everything and reset it back to it's original software actually.

But I agree, it could be a mod to the operating system that has been done. Unique interface or something like that. The Palm OS that comes with Treo's does not allow for multiple applications to be run.

It looks like you're right. I did a hard reset, and tried connecting to the Prius again before re-syncing my data and apps back, and it worked. So, now I've re-synced my contacts and calendar, and put the apps back on one by one, and it still works, so hopefully whatever was causing that problem is gone for good.

So, just in case anyone else runs into this problem, when you turn the car on and your Treo is asleep, the Prius should force the Treo to wake up and then the phone will connect (assuming you've set it up to connect). If not, do a hard reset and try again before re-syncing.

Of course, now my Treo's email (Versamail) isn't working at all, so I must not have reinstalled somehting that that needs, but that's a post for another forum...

    Thanks for the help,
    Philip

Versamail has never been stable on the 650. But then it's from Microsoft

Go with Snapperfish if you want a really good email setup. Too bad it's not free :(
