Check it out guys. Wife drove the PiP, same route! It is newer, has different batteries, but pretty close to real world figures (and she's not a feather pedaler either).

First test ~24 miles, slight downhill, 30-40 mph, PiP already having an empty battery:
    • 107 MPG PiP
    • 92.6 MPG 3rd Gen Prius
    • That's 13.5% improvement in regular Hybrid driving! But...of course maybe the 1st Gen PiP caught more regen...
Second test ~60 miles, pretty even grade, 70% highway 65 mph+ and 30% city 20-30 mph, PiP is fully charged.
    • 98 MPG over 66.3 miles PiP (Not sure what happened here!)
    • 55.3 MPG over 53.9 miles 3rd Gen Prius
    • That's a 43.6% improvement including the 11 miles at 999 MPG...but how much did I do on the later 55.3 miles of hte PiP?
On other separate tests I would travel 80 miles with a fully charged PiP in the summer and consistently yield 62 MPG while my 3rd Gen would do 55 - so definitely a tall-tale sign of the improvement of the PiP which may lead to something greater when the Prime comes around.

nice! i have always felt that pip is 10% better than gen 2, but i never owned a gen 3. how are you measuring pip mpg's without refilling and hand calculating?

Ok so I'm using the display.

However, I do have a lifetime ownership calculation that strictly calculates Hybrid Miles.

My only gripe is that I've had non-hypermilers drive my vehicles and since I drive the PiP most I'd figure it'd be more efficient lol...

So, calculation on strict HV mode (none of this MPGe stuff...)

2010 3rd Gen Lifetime: 46.10 Average MPG (Bleck, I know! lol)
    2012 PiP Lifetime: 49.06

    Difference: 6% better in PiP.

But with the PiP I know you can cheat a little...HV miles count I think if you're in HV mode and you may have some EV miles left...I'm not sure. But my calculation is strictly based on HV miles as shown by the PiP.

Excluding 11 miles of EV, you managed ~81mpg in the Pip over 55.3 miles. From personal experience, the pip gets crazy good mileage from ~55-70mph (I'll see 70+mpg tanks driving ~65mph). In general, the pip can get much better mileage than the normal Prius if you keep your foot out of it and can use EV mode well.

INL has some pretty good information on long term testing. Even though both the pip and normal Prius get the same FE ratings, INL's 2013 pips have gotten 15+% better fuel economy in charge sustaining (52, 49, 51, and 52) mode than their 2010 Prius fleet did (43 and 45.6). The 2013 pip data is on the first page, and if you go to the second, you'll see the 2010 Prius data.

how do you figure? you would have to know how much gas was used.

98mpg over 66.3 miles requires about .68 gallons of gas. Subtract the 11 miles of EV mode travel to get 55.3 miles of HV mode. Using .68 gallons of gas over those 55.3 miles results in 80+ mpg.

'requires .68 gallons of gas' is the misnomer, no? that would be deciding the mpg's before trying to measure the mpg's.

That's inferno's miles/mpg info. It could be incorrect, but if it's correct, then that provides the amount of gas used.
