This thread makes me less worried about my car. I have a 2004 with about 118,000 miles on it. I would like to drive it for at least the next six years. Even if I have to put a new hybrid battery in it would still be a lot less money than buying a new car.

You can start balancing your battery now to possibly extend the life of it, maybe it'll go another 6 years?

Can you explain what balancing the battery means? Is this something I can do or is it done at the dealership? Thanks.

You can buy the equipment to do it through hybrid automotive, or at the prius chat shop.

It is a grid charger "prolong system" that you charge your battery with and it's used to prevent the battery module from getting weak and out of balance. That is usually how they fail and the "prolong system" helps in preventing that. It's something you do every few months and it seems to be working quite well for the members here.

Get more information at the hybrid automotive website. I built my own but it does the same job, just less refined

If you're not too far away, I can try balancing your battery and see how you like it. It's a process you should do every few months
