I bought a 2005 Prius base model with under 77K mi. from a local Nissan dealer on June 1 and it is still on limited warranty until 7/30. (I love it btw - first Toyota!)
a month after owning it, and about the time the weather got hot enough to need AC, I started hearing a squeaky moan (ish) noise coming from the ac unit when switching it on or off.
I took it in to the Nissan dealership and they listened and ID'd the noise as the "blender", and told me it was nothing to be concerned about (I do not believe that) and it's just a normal blender noise for an 11 year old car.
I think they didn't want to deal with it at all. (not that I'd want to spend the money, either, because so far the AC is working fine, but I can't shake the concept that it shouldn't be making that sort of noise at all (it wasn't there when I bought it)
I think it IS something that will lead to needing some sort of repair.
Advice??????? Should I bring it somewhere else once my warranty is up?
Does anyone even know what I am talking about? Should I be worried about this sound? (which seems to be getting ever so slightly louder each time).
I can live with the noise, so long as I feel reassured that the dealership service dept wasn't giving me a load of hooey. I thought I'd put this out here on PriusChat before calling the Toyota dealership.
thanks for any input anyone can give me.

If it's a longish squeak as you change modes, that is fairly common. It's probably a rubber door seal dragging on plastic duct. Mine does that in some weather and use conditions. The repair cost would be very high, and not judged necessary by many. The repair would entail taking the dash completely apart, and the squeak might get replaced by a rattle or two if it's not reassembled perfectly. Your warranty might just cover the drive train, but good luck with it.

As Andrew said, when the flaps under the dash move, as they get older, they can moan.

I look upon as a bit like myself. In my teens and up to my late 30s, no moans when I moved (unless wifey was ordering me to do something).

Now, around 60, almost any move I make elicts a moan.

My (wife's really) Prius just starting do this in the past couple months, but you can certainly tell what it is very easily....

No worries unless it really breaks, as Andrew said, not worth the $$$ to fix.

congrats on your new prius! sounds like a gem with low miles. but time will take it's toll, and i agree with all above, it's a superficial noise, no worries. all the best!(y)
