My intent with this post was not to spread disbelief, or start an anti-toyota revolt.

I just wanted to know if gen 1-3 Prius owners experienced what I thought to be a shi**y door lock system. If I got the Camry assembled on a Monday, so be it ;)

2nd Camry here, a 1999 and a 2010. No problems with either car's door lock actuators.

Also, my parents have owned many Toyota vehicles over the years. None have had door lock actuators fail.

OP just had some bad luck.

One thing we do, with car in locked garage: leave the car unlocked.

    >.<

So what I said was for the Gen 2 Prius. It had that 3rd option. You're right, there isn't the 3rd individual option for the Gen 3.

I guess I'm one of the unlucky ones. I've had my 2011 Prius for 5 years to the date, and problems are few and far in between, but I did just start having a door lock issue. For about half the times I try to lock my doors either using the fob, the door lock button on the inside of the door, or the touch lock on my door handle, the passenger's side front door won't lock. I hear it try twice and then it gives up. I have to manually physically lock the door.

I literally went to the mechanic this morning and they told me the door lock actuator is failing. If this is the issue you're talking about, then yes, it does exist and I'm living proof of that, but based on the difficulty in finding other people who have the same issue as me on Google, it seems like a very rare problem so far.

Based on links I eventually found, I ended up buying an actuator from eBay, and based on the title, the door locks are common between the 2004-2012 Priuses (I don't know what the agreed upon plural for Prius is), so it would seem that a rare problem potentially exists on any of those models. Again, very rare... but it's there.

    Edit:
Oh and to answer your last question about price, the mechanic told me it was $359 for a single door lock actuator from the dealer (Tustin Toyota), but they recommended I buy my own and just let the mechanic do it for cheaper. The ones I bought from eBay were $72.99 for the driver's side front door (as it's also doing it, but not as frequently as my passenger's side), and $42.99 for the passenger's side front door.

I bought my 2010 in OCT15. 90xxx miles (now 101xxx). I found out after I purchased that the rear driver-side door lock does not work unless manually controlled. Sounds like an actuator problem.

So after 5 years and 201,000 miles... my front drivers door unlocks via the keyfob and/or keyless entry about 1/3 of the time and when it doesn't open and I try via the keyless the car beeps about 8 times in a row.

I changed out the Keyfob battery... no luck. Took it to the dealer (another post on that coming) and they said my 12v battery is fine and that I need a new front door actuator.

They said it would be $700 to fix... I laughed and told them that I would deal with manually reaching my arm in and opening the door. They did however offer a 15% discount....

Long story a bit shorter, I'm going to try to DIY - Just thought I would share before.

I believe it makes difference whether car ”sleeps under open sky” or under roof/garage. Under open sky moisture condensates during night and the next day it dries out. Doing this pumping day after day for 10 years or so eventually gets to it. I park one of my cars under roof and have had zero problems with locks or electronics in general, even though that particular model tend to have issues with all kinds of control unit failures, keyless antenna’s, locks especially etc etc. When i bought the car it immediately had issue with remote control unit and was changed under warranty. Since then i’ve put two times the kilometers it had then and no issues whatsoever
