I'm considering upgrading the head unit on my 2011 Prius and - most out of curiosity - am wondering if it is possible to replace the stock radio with a later model radio. For example while looking for a head unit I found a stock unit for a 2012-2014 with touchscreen, nav, color, HD radio etc for about $250 (like this one):

Considering that the lowest price touchscreen model on Crutchfield with similar options is $500 (the Clarion NX605), would this be possible or would it not fit, not function properly etc.?

Or is the audio on the newer units just as bad as on the older one?

    Thanks all.

I did this on my 2010, used a 2012. I would say the audio is about the same. I was interested in the updated features (display, bluetooth, ipod).

If you stick with a like model (JBL/non-JBL), there's only one wire swap needed along with an antenna adapter.

I was wondering the same for my 2010. I want to swap my JBL/Navi/GPS HU with the 2013+ Entune Premium HU that has the 7" LCD HDD GPS. The rears on both look different but most of wiring should be the same. Does anyone have the wiring diagram for both HU?

I've studied both on techinfo.toyota.com. All the connector part numbers and pinouts are shown except the ones for antennas. Looks like several of the connectors are different ... the shells can be ordered ... quite a few pins to rearrange. Somebody might sell an adapter harness that works.

    Definitely looks like a project.

There's also a company on Amazon making a full Android Prius head unit. It's less expensive and feature rich. I almost bought it but found I didn't need the stock look.

Thanks ChapmanF. As long as both HU has the same rear inputs repining shouldn't be a problem. Any chance you can get me the wiring diagrams for both HU? TIS requires a membership to access their website.

From what I see, none of the connector shells are common to both, so it would be necessary to collect the whole set and move all the pins over (that's assuming optimistically that the terminals themselves are mostly the same and will fit in both shells). Unless some vendor has an appropriate adapter harness, which would be easier.

The antenna connections are a bit of a puzzle; my 2010 HU has a bog-standard round Motorola jack, I think the 2012+ has the Toyota-special rectangular twin-coax-plus-amp-wire thing. Plus 2010 has the XM tuner under the driver's seat, 2012+ builds it into the HU, with any luck the antenna would plug in, just have to loop the cable back.

As far as I can tell, the USB/aux jack assembly is the same (86190-0E030) but the cable that leads from it to the under-seat USB box in 2010 does not have the same connector on the end as what should fit in the newer HU, and that connector part number is published (90980-12916) but doesn't seem to be orderable.

Then of course the improved FM antenna system in 2012+ (if it matters to you) seems to involve a new right quarter window.

I know, my last $15 ran out and I'm sort of saving up things I want to find out until I have enough to go feed the meter again.

They've done a really nice job making an online, interactive wiring diagram, and they've done it the right way, using open standards (a lot of SVG and Javascript) so you can do things like highlight one pin of a connector and follow everywhere that circuit goes, pull right up the part numbers or the physical locations in the car, etc. I was originally thinking I'd just subscribe and save everything, but the way they've set it up is so useful, and most ways I can think of to save it would turn it into something much more static and less useful, so I ended up not saving any actual diagrams from the last time I fed the meter. At two days for $15, or a solid month for $75 if you know you'll be going back a lot, it's pretty reasonable.

Also. I was comparing 2010 and 2012. I see that you're talking about 2013, which I am assuming is the same as 2012 (as far as I've been able to find, 2012 was the refresh year), but I'm not 100% positive. You might want to check a 2013 diagram just to confirm we're talking about the same thing.

    The connectors for 2012 (that seem to be orderable) are L111 (90980-12553), L127 (90980-10997), L128 (90980-10996), and L130 (90980-12555).

There's also the whole business about the newer system being GreenEdge, meaning different speakers and a different amp, but I'm optimistically assuming you can feed the newer HU output to the older amp and only the amp needs to be matched to the speakers.

Hmm, it looks like my notes aren't complete, somehow I wrote down the output pins for front right (L127 pin 1 + pin 5 -), front left (L127 pin 2 + pin 6 -), and rear left (L128 pin 2 + pin 6 -) and didn't write down anything for rear right. :) One more thing to look up on my next $15....

Clarification: everything in this post is about the 7", Denso nav style HUs.

Another piece of the puzzle ... the very square-shaped 90980-12916 USB connector doesn't seem to be orderable from Toyota, and I'm not sure of the order number of the harness that includes it either ... I wonder if it could be 82142-47270, but without seeing a picture of one (for finding someone who'll let me take their 2012 apart), it will be hard to know. That harness is about $80 at online dealers, a little much to spend just to find out if it's right.

On the other hand, for three or four bucks, there's this. The other end is a standard USB A female ... and I think people already know how to Dremel that to fit in the 86190-0E030 jack module, if it comes to that.

This looks like it would also work (credit: found here). Instead of ending in a standard USB A, it looks like it ends in the same connector that's in the 2010's under-seat USB box, so the existing 2010 cable from the jack module should plug into it, if it'll reach.

Updated update: according to this post, there's one harness that looks like it might do the necessary conversions for the USB (L131), L130, and the AM/FM antenna adapter (which also looks like a tee of L127, for the antenna amp power circuit), for about $90. It looks very close, but not quite the magic bullet (the easy-to-see ends look right for the 2012 nav unit, but the far ends don't look right for the 2010 Prius. But at least it's an easy kit with some of the more obscure parts.

This unit looks awesome. If it is a direct plug in from the stock unit then its a no brainer either at $362.70 new or $182.00 used.

The headunit you posted looks like it is out of a Prius V(Wagon) and wouldn't be interchangeable in the conventional model.

scblair did post a photo that looks like it's from a v. Danger seems to be talking about a liftback (and that Android unit on Amazon looks like the right shape for a liftback).

The Amazon unit calls itself a replacement for 2009-2013, when the connectors on the OEM units definitely changed between 2011 and 2012, so I assume it must come with (at least) two different adapter harnesses? It shows a round Motorola jack for the radio antenna, which is what the 2010-11 cable ends in, but not the 2012+ (that ends in a white rectangular connector with two coax cables and a preamp power wire). It shows a round threaded connector for the GPS antenna (the cable from the Prius GPS antenna ends in a square coax connector).

Again, I would hope/assume that the necessary adapter cables have all been figured out and come in the box with that thing ... otherwise it, too, would be a crazy project to install.

Apparently the RL+ and RL- in my notes don't really mean rear left and rear right; they mean whatever IVO+ and IVO- meant in 2010. Both years it's just one shielded differential pair going to the amp, and Mr. Google thinks it has something to do with the navigation lady's voice.

Speaking of shields, the IVO/RL pair is shielded, and the right-channel/left-channel audio pairs are shielded, and the shields only terminate on one end (to avoid ground loops, presumably). Wouldn't you know, 2010 terminated them at the headunit end, 2012 terminates them at the amp.

So I don't yet even know if the 2012 hu will play nicely with the 2010 amp, but even if it will, there'll have to be some extra effort to make sure those shields are grounded at one end or the other....

The other shielded runs (to the microphone, aux jack, and backup camera) terminate the shield the same way in both years.

Turns out there's a junction right behind the headunit, it's a separate continuation cable that goes down to the driver's seat. Just unplug at the junction and the XM antenna should plug right into the headunit. At least something's easy.

Edit: I can't edit post 12, but it had a mistake "rear left and rear right" should have been "rear left + and -".
