Evidently going through the local drive thru car wash will do it.

Yeah, I just lightly tapped on it today, and it felt kinda loose. I think I might apply a couple tiny dots of super glue in the crack.

It could be worth checking that the eyelet cover on the other side is securely attached too

Yes as in don't take it to a car wash. Hand wash if possible with a mild car wash solution.

I try to avoid automatic car washes for two reasons. First reasons they don't wash the car all that well, 2nd reason they're hard on the paint and weather stripping. Always go for hand washing the car, takes a bit more time, but it will save you money and you'll get the car much cleaner.

For no apparent reason? That kind of bothers me...

I'd take the car back to the dealer and complain profusely in front of all the prospective customers. This really shouldn't happen. I can't believe I'm seeing these negative posts AFTER I bought my Prius. ;)

It bothers me too, and paying my $500 deductible just seems silly over something that's aesthetic.

Ugh, I wish I had it in me to cause a scene to get the part replaced. Ive worked in retail/customer service and have too much empathy for the employees who are just doing their job....

Hey Michelle, wait 'till you see the water in the headlights after a car wash. A couple people swear they have water in there.

(I added some little guppies and goldfish to mine.)

The only time I ever would consider taking this car through any kind of car wash is in the winter to wash off the salt, too dang cold to drag out the garden hose and all that jazz...of course make sure it is above freezing and that everything dries up should the temps fall below freezing unless you like pulling off the weather stripping the next morning when you go to get into the car...

At any rate I would take the car back and complain, however, more than likely they'll say it is your fault and it's not covered under warranty...hence the idea to make a scene. Twist their arm a little bit, I don't think such a part costs all that much anyway.

I'm always perfectly reasonable but I do tend to get stuff done. The key is to find someone who can be my partner. And that is the employee who greets me as I walk in the door. I have no shame in setting high expectations. I too have been on the other end of the business stick. I had my own company and charged very high prices to include superb customer service in the price tag. I know I won't get that with a commodity item like a car, but I sure try hard. I had a very long conversation with the customer service manager this morning. I talked his ear off, gave lots of compliments, and ripped a hole in certain aspects of my purchase experience. He promised me a discount on tires, parts, tires for life... well not life, but as long as he's around.

I just had this happen to the cover also. Drove across South Dakota and when I stopped for gas I noticed the cover hanging by it's lanyard. We did fight some pretty heavy crosswinds across I-90 so I figure that was the cause. It didn't seem very secure when I popped it back in so when I get back home I plan on using a dab of silicone to keep them in place.

A few days back we were stuck in the absolute WORST time traffic jam, on the way to the airport, clock ticking, everything at a dead-crawl, for over an hour.

I found a little solace and distraction, when a Honda Odyssey was alongside, with about 4" sloshing around in a rear brake light. I started muttering about goldfish.

They made their flight by the way, it was scary close though.

    I like your style.

That said, I would look at his a valid warantee claim and approach both the dealer and Toyota with a calm yet firm resolve.

You were using the car as it was designed -- and make no mistake about it cars are designed to survive the rigors of a normal automatic car wash.

Not only did the piece come loose, but the tether failed to keep it connected to your car.

When you go to the dealership (or go again) take good notes after you leave while they are fresh in your memory.

    Be "professional", of course.

Follow up with an email recounting your visit and restating exactly what you would like them to do under warantee. If they say no in a return email, don't sweat it -- you just want to create a log showing your effort. Be nice, and send follow up emails as high up the dealer's corporate structure as you can.

Once that has been done, share everything you have done with the Toyota dealer rep by email and just keep pushing. Do your homework-- take pictures of the car wash to satisfy yourself that they were not doing anything outside the norm -- be confident.

Bottom line, what you experienced should not have happened. Car makers understand that vehicles will be driven through car washes and need to hold up to them.

You have a valid warantee claim-- I hope you will see this through!
