Can't use "Dial by Name" voice commands w/ BT and pkg 6?

I ran into a problem tonight that I couldn't figure out.

I have an '06 Prius with Package #6 (Bluetooth and voice recognition, but not the full voice recognition that you get with the nav system). Up until today I didn't have a bluetooth phone but I could still play around a bit with the voice recognition. I created a few contact entries and recorded voice tags for them. I'd press the "handset up" button on the steering when and then I'd press the voice command button. The computer would say something like "Please say a command". I'd say "Dial by name" and then the computer would scold me for not having a phone connected.

Tonight I mated my Prius with a Motorola V505. The mating process went very smoothly (unlike real life). My problem is that now when I press the handset up button and then the voice recognition button the prompt is something like "Say the number". I don't get the "Say a command" prompt anymore and I don't get the opportunity to do anything except speak the numbers I want to dial. That works, but it's not really what I want.

When I delete the mated phone the behavior goes back to what it was before I had the phone connected. I've tried deleting and recreating the contacts but it didn't make a difference.

Is this normal behavior? If it's not, does anyone have an idea about what's going on with my system?

    Thanks.

If you press the voice command button, it should say "Say a command" when you have a phone mated. I have an '06 package 6 and just got the voice commands working today. I've had to play around with it a bit, but you should be able to do dial by name.

Thanks for the reply, HokieHybrid. At least I know that it should work that way with a package 6.

Do you have to be on one of the Telephone screens when you press the voice command button? If I'm sitting on any other screen (like the Energy screen) when I press the voice command button nothing happens. I first have to press the "handset up" button then the voice command button before I get any voice command response. Is that the way it works for you?

I've got an 06 package 5. 98% of the time it will "say command." Occasionally it will insist "say number." I don't unpair the phone, etc. ... I just hit the hangup button and try again. Hasn't asked for a number in a long while.

OK -- I think I've figured it out and, truth be told, I feel kind of silly that I got so stumped. I think it works like this:

Situation #1: The car is not moving
When you press the "handset up" button the screen goes to the numeric entry screen. If you press the "talk" button on the steering wheel the computer will tell you to "Say the number", because you're on the numeric keypad screen. If you then go to the Phone Book and press the Talk button the computer will tell you to "Say the name", because you're on the screen that contains all of the names. If you go to any other phone-related screen, like maybe Speed Dial, and press the Talk button the computer will say "Say a command" because it doesn't know if you're planning on dialing by name or by number.

Situation #2: The car is moving
This situation simplifies things a bit. Thanks to the lawyers at Toyota you're sent to the Speed Dial screen where your only choices are to either choose an entry from your speed dial list or to use the voice-recognition system. If you press the talk button the computer will say "Say a command" because it doesn't know if you're planning on dialing by name or by number. You can then go down the "Dial by name" or "Dial by number" branch to complete your call.

At least I think that's how it works.

Great work! I am having the same problem with the "Say by number" prompt, but when I get back home I'll be able to try out your situations below and hope it solves the problem.

So, I guess my only question is, does this mean that you have to hit an extra button on the screen between "handset up" and the voice command button? It would be nice if there was a way to set the default "handset up" screen to either the phone book or speed dial instead of the numeric pad, when not moving.

    Thanks!!
