Should Danny's Toyota Hybrid Boards Be Combined?

I'm deliberately posting this in the Main Forum, rather than the website suggestions forum, in order to maximize eyeballs on the topic and because I think this topic is a bit broader than the average website suggestion. It is also a bit of a double post, since I've also made the same arguments on camrychat.com.

In the context of Danny soliciting ideas for growing that new site, a suggestion has been made for Danny to combine all his Toyota hybrid sites, somewhat like greenhybrid.com, but with Danny's unique style. There could be separate forums and subforums for each model (as few separate subforums as possible). I have loudly seconded that motion and wondered if anyone over here had any thoughts on the matter.

I can only think of 2 possible reasons to have separate sites - avoiding the possible confusion of reading about separate models you may or may not be interested in, and a possible economic motivation (not that there's anything wrong with that). I don't know if it makes more sense economically to have several small sites with their own advertising, or one big site. Maybe Danny can comment on that. Although I assume one site is easier to maintain than multiple sites, maybe Danny has some contrary thoughts.

If the issue is one of avoiding possible confusion, I don't think it's legitimate in this case, due to the tremendous overlap in the technology and parts used among the different Toyota hybrids. Also, people can always choose the forums they visit, screen out forums, and/or list the models they own, so their questions will make more sense.

There is no reason to have separate websites that each have their own login and their own non-model specific forums like Fred's House of Pancakes, Hybrid News, Private Sales, Commercial Sales, etc. For those forums especially, one big site makes more sense. Because of the techonolgy and parts overlap, even some of the forums you might think of as model specific may not really need to be, like Knowledge Base, Electronics, and Modifications.

Having just sold my Prius, I have less and less reason to visit Priuschat, but I'm reluctant to give up the habit. I'm not a huge poster, but I do enjoy watching and learning, or just being entertained by some of the antics. Unfortunately, there's not much going on over in the Camrychat.com ghetto right now. I'm sure it will grow over time, but the very nature of the Camry may keep it from having quite the same passionate mixed following of propeller heads, politico anti gas hogs, and enviro friendlies.

I think anyone with multiple models, or doing commercial sales, or providing expert advice (like galaxee and her husband), would have a lot easier time following a single board. I also think, from the standpoint of building an online community, the interaction of people with different models would be interesting and desirable.

So, what does everyone else think? Since I'm now out of the Prius club (by the way, did Danny ever buy his Prius?), maybe I'm biased because I don't really want to leave. But I just don't get why these sites should be separate. Maybe it's just time for me to get a new hobby! :D

yes and yes

The 2nd yes - www.hihychat.com and while I'm at it escapehybridchat.com and camrychat.com rxhybridchat.com is up but dead.

The first yes:

I think Danny should combine the boards. This way, we don't have to register multiple times and I don't have to leave the site. I can go to.. say hybridchat.com and then click the Prius subforum or the Camry subforum.

Also, it's easier to post news since I don't have to post multiple times or if I don't, then people might miss something. In addition, hybrid meets will be easier to organise, esp. with this new rsvp system.

I say no. It's already hard enough to keep up with all the posts. We're just back from a 3 day vacation and they're were 16 pages of new posts.

I agree. I would like to keep the content Prius only. Call me a Prius snob if you must.

***Caution - free flowing thought ahead. Could make no sense whatsoever***

This is an interesting idea, and frankly it's one I've been thinking about for a while. As the site admin and owner, I can see both sides of the argument. It would be much easier for me to provide a top-notch website if it were on one domain because it would be easier to roll out new features easier and more efficiently. It would be also a lot easier for me to manage - you have no idea the # of various emails I get everyday about simple things like passwords needing to be reset, or validating new accounts that take up a ton of time.

On the other hand, there's something to be said for having the boards be unique. Yes, the Prius is the hybrid powerhouse right now, so I spent 85% of my time here on PC. I think it creates a sense of loyalty and ownership for Prius owners here at PC, or HiHy owners at HiHyChat.

I do own several domains that I've bought for future expansion or future consolidation. For instance, the Lexus hybrid individual board doesn't seem to be active at all, so I purchased www.lexushybriddrive.com and have been thinking about grouping all of the Lexus Hybrid discussion over there. I like the Invision Power Board software that PC uses - so much that I've bought lifetime licenses for all of the existing boards. IPB is soon coming out with a software solution that will allow members to go from one site to another without having to re-register. So, basically if you're a member of PC you can go to CamryChat.com and log in without re-registering.

Here's what I've been thinking about doing with that software ability:
• Use 1 domain - www.hybridchat.com (I own it already, so don't even try :) )
• Set up a couple of generic forums such as FHOP or whatever that the whole community could be involved in regardless of car model
• Have redirecting forums for each car model like one that says "Toyota Prius" and have that link to htt://prius.hybridchat.com, and the one for the civic would go to http://civic.hybridchat.com.
• Why do it this way? This keeps the "View New Posts" databases seperate and allows for you when you come to the site to only see Prius-related posts. If you want to check out what's going on with the camry - go to camry.hybridchat.com and click on View New Posts, etc.
What do you guys think of an idea like that? We could still banner the sites as we do today with each subdomain having it's own logo and identity.

Yeah, I remember brainstorming this idea with Danny a few months ago. He really has been thinking about this for quite a while. It seemed that for every good idea there was at least one counterargument. For most of us, the "View New Posts" is the biggy. As Danny said, combining all the boards into one database would mean that when you hit VNP you would get every new post from every board forum on every board. Just this morning, after 12 hours of being away I had three pages just on Prius alone. When the other boards pick up, it would be a dozen every twelve hours.
Also, we discussed catastrohpic server crashes. Hate to have to think about it, but they are the occasional reality. Keeping them physically seperate and backing them up individually would help limit the amount of lost data should something go horribly horribly wrong. Or if one site goes down for whatever reason, we can now go to the others to bide the time and see what's going on with the HyCams.

Wow, Danny warned of stream-of-consciousness writing but I think I inadvertantly one-upped him. :)

Gotta run now, Google Sidebar just presented a news article "Toyota, Honda gain as May sales sink for Detroit." I think I want to read that.

Danny- that sounds like a good idea to me also (I'm thinking about possibly getting a HiHy in the future so that forum is of interest to me.)
I used to own a Honda Element. The main owner's forum is at HondaSUV.com; there they have individual forums for the Element, Pilot, CR-V, etc. You might want to check that out as an example.

As long as there is a way to view all new Prius posts and not have to wade through gazillions of FHOP posts, I'm all for it. :D

And on other future thought- what happens when ALL of the Toyota models have a hybrid ? MatrixChat.com, Scionchat.com, Yarischat.com, you get the picture...

sounds good to me- why not have one large board with a prius portal, a camry portal, etc. i'm liking the train of thought in this thread.

What would you do with different people who have the same user name, but on different boards? If one log-on works for all the boards, or the baords are combined into one, there could be conflicts of existing user names.

sounds like what I had in mine but better lol. FHOP as a general forum is probably best. That way, when we go into the subforums and click VNP, FHOP won't be there for those people who dislike it.

I agree with the others, this seems like the right direction to go.

Yes! Many of us own multiple hybrids. Check out scionlife or maxima.org for a good example on how to combine multiple vehicles into a single board.

i say no unless it can be done without slowing the site down. i guess it relates to how much overlap is at both sites. having no interest in a larger hybrid makes my interest lacking to say the least.

I believe this is EXPRESSLY AGAINST THE PROCEDURES for this forum... to post "out of category" for the specific purpose of expanding exposure.
