exactly my understanding; Toyota's cost is outrageous ($700? $1100? precisely too much $$$ for me!). there is only one maker of Techstream: Toyota. any less expensive alternative that bears the Techstream name is provided in an unlawful manner.

Does that mean it isn't done, or isn't even done widely? of course not.

but PC may be liable for endorsing illegal methods, which could, in turn, be bad for members and newcomers alike that benefit by this great forum!

    just my 2¢.

I have the same version running on a new laptop running Windows 10. If you will follow the installation instructions, step by step, it will work correctly. Emphasis on step-by-step!

If you are not tech savvy enough to understand the instructions then find a friend that can help.

Just to set the record straight, I believe aaroncv3's contention that PC members are engaging in piracy or doing anything illegal is incorrect.

Toyota Techstream is available directly from Toyota's website for free download.

In order to use the TS software you need a Win XP/Win 7 (32-bit) laptop (or computer, but less convenient) and an interface cable OBDII –> USB.

Both these items are also available from Toyota, but as pointed out at a cost. The Toyota laptop is an army field grade machine so that it can be use in a workshop environment.

Likewise, with the interface cable, it is of a high quality that you pay for.

In order to make it affordable, DIYers opt to use cheaper options for the laptop and interface cable.

There is nothing in the instructions linked to in post #12 that is illegal or software piracy.

There are essentially 2 steps there, one that tells you how to use TechStream in its offline mode and the the other is how to install the driver for the cable.

If you still think this is piracy or illegal, so be it–you are entitled to your opinion. But please cease and desist, you have made your point. Time to move on.

To the OP, the link you posted contains all the information you need to get up and running, maybe you could have a tech savvy friend work alongside you to ensure you do everything correct.

Also, another question you asked, which OS version, that depends on the whether the drivers for the cable are 32-bit or 64-bit. Obviously for the 32-bit driver, it is far easier to install that in Win XP or Win 7 (32-bit). For the 64-bit drivers any of the 64-bit OS versions should work ok. Do you need to get a separate laptop, yes. Which one? Get one where the OS matches the drivers. Another option to consider if you have the newer 64-bit OS, is setting up a Win XP or Win 7 (32-bit) virtual machine and then instal your 32-bit driver in there.

The section in those instructions where it does the registry edit only need to be done if you are trying to install the 32-driver on a 64-bit OS. People have a varied success rate doing that, so my advice is to stick with the OS that matches the drivers.

Incidentally, there is a much better OBDII interface that costs 3-4x the price of the MVCI, but does not have any of the install hassles of MVCI which is called VxDiag for Toyota. Available on the usual marketplaces 4mazon fleabay and even VxDiag, com. It is also more reliable and faster in operation than its cheaper counterpart.

    Hope that helps.
