Hybrid Battery: When doing it yourself goes terribly wrong.

    These batteries are connected in series. Meaning the voltages all add up together to create the total voltage. So balancing really does nothing to help the circuit. A low or bad battery can actually be like a load within this circuit and bring down the total voltage. But just checking each battery is an OK check but if you have a small load of resistance then you can see how the voltage will drop more on a bad battery. That's the one to change out.
    And coating the terminals help prevent the air getting to them and that helps stop the corrosion. And it really doesn't hurt the conductivity factor as previously noted.

    Does anyone know exactly which scanners will be able to detect the hybrid system codes for the 2007 prius?

    I see that the Tachyon H1 scan tool works on toyota hybrids, but I don't want to buy with only one option.

    mini vci, and a windows laptop. also, check with @ChapmanF , he uses something better.

    Also, while I usually use Techstream, I also use the glitchy mini VCI. Be careful though, the mini vci recently really messed up and left Tue brakes on my Prius a total mess along with settong a whole bunch of serious hybrid system codes on a gen 1 car and my gen 2. Torque seems to bs great if you have the correct csv files, and seven still, I have had to rewrite some of the seawolf pids to make the math or units correct. Techstream or Mastertech scantool is the best for hybrid toyotas.



    Your one module that is low os complete toast. With a .3 volt difference between modules, it will set codes. Remember, most scan tools wont list Hybrid system codes

    BAFX 34t5 OBDII ($22 amazon) is what i got. You need Andriod OS and $5 Torque app for it to work.

    I charged and balanced the battery with the charging kit that I bought from jeff652's website. For a brief, glorious moment the car was working normally with no warning lights illuminated. Then I put the metal cover over the left side of the battery, and the moment was over.

    Now I have four warnings: The Red Triangle of Death, VSC, the Check Engine Light, and the brake warning light. So I hooked up my new Tachyon H1, struggled with the software for a while and finally got it to connect. From this I learned absolutely nothing. No DTCs. I never realized that scantools were so hit or miss. I've spent $120 on scantools and learned nothing!

    On the other hand the car shifts into gear now. So what the hell, I drove it. It seems to work fine. Gas mileage seems normal. The diagram on the screen with the battery, electric motor, and gasoline engine does the same thing that it always did, so I guess it is working normally.

    I've started on the discharge phase of the battery reconditioning process, because I have no better ideas. I guess I'm just going to use it like normal until a problem definitively declares itself.
