My windshield cracked recently. I was referred to Satellite by insurance. Satellite asked specifically about a HUD and auto-dimming rearview mirror. Saying yes to HUD resulted in a quote of over $950. Saying no to HUD, but yes to auto-dimming resulted in quote of $333 including tax and disposal fee. I called and asked what the difference was; the Satellite person said the HUD actually had wires embedded in the glass. Didn't sound right as covering the dashboard module with a piece of paper makes the HUD disappear. Called Toyota dealer, said they didn't know for sure, but didn't think there were any wire connections for the HUD, perhaps a coating on the glass to improve reflectivity, they'd check further and call back. They did call back and said the only difference appeared to be OEM versus aftermarket/generic. I asked for and they gave number to Toyota US Headquarters. I called them and the young lady put on hold while talking with a "Product Specialist" and then relayed there was technology embedded in the glass. I told her I didn't believe that and explained why (reflective module stated above). She referred me to a senior person that stated there was no technology built in to the glass, it is purely a light reflective system, and the price difference was OEM vs aftermarket.

If anyone that "knows" the reason for the price difference, I'd love to hear why the OEM glass is 3x the price. I've got a few days to cancel and go with OEM glass if it's worth it.

I remember reading some time back where someone said you need to use an OEM windshield, but I don't remember the reason that was given. The windshield on our old van had the radio antenna in it, so I needed to make sure any new one did too. I don't know if the OEM Prius windshield has anything in it to make the HUD more readable or not, but it's certainly worth checking into. It's surprising he got different opinions when he talked to Toyota.

:)The HUD is reflected on the bottom left side of the windshield from the top of the dash. It's a fairly simple system. So option number two, $333 plus fees.

Windshield had nothing to do with HUD. No wires embedded into windshield.

If it going through ur ins, get OEM of their will to cover it.

If not the go with the aftermarket

I had a chip in my windshield and was doing research for a replacement in case the chip was not repairable. All my research (dealer, various forums, manufacture sites) point to the fact that vehicles equipped with HUD do have special windshields which provide a surface that the HUD can project a clear undisrupted image onto.

My recommendation: Go through your insurance and get the proper glass installed.

The OEM windshield does have some sound deadening built into it, which could explain the price difference. Don't know about HUD, though.

Let me start by saying I don't know the reason for the price difference.

But I have read several pieces about HUD displays that seem to suggest that the area in which the information or display is reflected does have special treatment.
The simplest explanation being that with a regular windshield you can get a ghost mirror reflection when looking at it. That needs to be avoided with a HUD to prevent double imaging. Therefore it is my understanding that the glass in the projection area is different than just the standard windshield.

That "might" be what is accounting for any price difference between a "standard" windshield and a HUD vehicle equipped windshield.

What was the status? When I read the OP's post, my first thought was the product specialist was confusing the windshield HUD with the MID. I've heard multiple Toyota dealers confuse the two - many aren't even aware the HUD exists!!! To my understanding, the MID (in some models) has special electronics in the glass that light up in response to the steering wheel button presses. To my understanding, the windshield has no electronics in it.

That said, if you have a HUD, you MUST use the OEM glass ONLY. Most replacement windshields are made by layering multiple panes of glass together. The OEM glass is a thick, single layer. The former will result in ghosting/blurring of your HUD.

There is no "special windshield". The price difference is OEM vs aftermarket. OEM is -usually- better, but it has NOTHING to do with the HUD, the MID, or anything else. The MID displays on the dash, not the windshield. The OEM is just built better. But as soon as you tell them it has any "advanced" systems, they don't want to take the chance that the aftermarket one won't work.

Built better how? Well, I haven't replaced a Prius windshield (yet), but my Pathfinder one was replaced with aftermarket. It was shoddily made, with "waves" in it. The glass shop looked at it and admitted it was junk, then replaced it with a real "Nissan Glass" one. Which had no waves. ;)

    The windshield is not special.

I had my windshield tinted and specifically asked about it affecting my HUD. I was advised it should be fine and it was. Granted very slightly darker but very minimal and the HUD displays as it always has w/o issue.

Still awaiting an official response as to if the Prius ECO windshield is actually embedded with the UV resistant stuff as originally advertised... Seems no one knows for sure... I don't own an ECO but have been wondering..
