Run it another 50 miles after the light comes on then see how much you can put in. If its 9.5, run it 100 miles after the light comes on.

I have a 2007 , and I'm currently at 188,000 miles. I bought the car with 110,000 miles on it 2 years ago. Of those 78000 miles, I put easily 55000 of them on with near daily fill ups. I was a courier and was driving it like I stole it most days; i.e. Just doing my work and not hypermile-Ing at all. Typical range per tank for me was 350-370 with 8.5 gallons. I found it easier simply to fill up every day no matter what I was doing just in case I had a long trip or a special delivery to make I never had to worry about fuel.
I no longer have that job, and I'm paying much greater attention to increasing range and mpg. I just put on a new set of ecopia a/s on & I generally put just about 400 miles on per 8.5 to 8.7 gallon fill ups.
Just had a really greAt tankful though. I did exactly 500 miles on 9 gallons. I wasn't hypermiling Per se, but I kept it at about 65-67 mph for most of the trip. To the OP, my point is that you can have lower mileage but generally even without trying hard you can get 47 miles to gallon. It sounds as if you have it straightened out by now , but I thought I contribute just the same.
