I suspect the original question had to do with impacts on battery life. But without identification of the specific chemistries, it is a question that can not be answered. The battery chemistry dictates what happens during charging.

The second part, grid effects, is silly as we're not seeing enough EVs to make a significant effect. It is also a technical problem that can easily be solved by Time-Of-Day charge rates. Better still, communications with the utilities so charging can can be coordinated.

you are correct about the question. and if you read the article, it's moot, because it's just full of vdub hype, and more bullcarp than toyota's hydrogen dreams.

Tis a fair point. Though in the next 30 years or so, quite a lot of developed nations are set to follow Japan, with regards to population "growth" ie: Japan is likely to half their population by the end of the century. Every one in the world is having less and less kids. Though of course that is in the mid term future, and not the short term future, where we need to sort the grid out first.

Emigration is a factor for population growth, too. Low natural resources, high cost of living, and a more negative view of foreigners isn't going to attract many immigrants to Japan.

Besides, if your population halves, that means half the EVs drawing on your now oversized grid.

Updating to a smart grid for efficiency and possible internet access through the grid are other reasons for updating the grid.

As to the OT, while overtaxing the batteries like Honda did in some IMA hybrid models, isn't impossible, I expect VW and others shooting for such charge rates will have more overhead buffer in the battery capacity than what is seen in BEV batteries now, to reduce the battery stress and increase charge speed.

This much is true. That being said, even in the countries where most immigration comes from, people are also having less and less kids in those nations too. It's quite interesting. The wealthier, and healthier a nation is, the less kids they have

I have not recently read all of the post on this thread ....... has the question been answered about the long term impact on rapid charging? I missed it if it was.

With proper cooling and charge rates(tapering when near full), there isn't much to worry about.

I wish! I'd have bought a model S already if I had that money!
