Kathleen2, congrats on your accomplishment of 60+ mpg, but I wonder how much of that gain would be attributed to running low on oil. I guess I'd rather have the peace of mind that my car is not going to be starved of oil when climbing steep hills or going down, than to have a slight mpg gain.

 

What do you think your overall average speed was to accomplish your 60mpg?

 

I am actually mad about my current tank 44..2 mpg! But it is do to a new person in my car pool. This person is a chain smoker. Smoking is no big deal in my car as a also smoke. The problem is this he also like the ac on all the time at like 65 – 70. well that sucks because the window is always down no matter what. This person smokes about 1.5 cigs in 6 mins iv timed it. this includes on the highway. Well the rest of us have taken a vote and this Monday he is out of our carpool.

To me he just defeats the point of ac when its 90 out and the windows are open.
The other two of us who smoke do not smoke on the highway and when our third person is with us we do not smoke he does not like it. The new guy well he just doesn’t care or listen to anyone. His comment is that his f250 gets worse mpg (12) so I should not complain about 40+ and as for the smoking, he says well the other guy should get over it the rest of us smoke. The rest of us have the windows down in an attempt to get away from his cloud. It’s horrible.

My normal mpg is usually around 56-58 mpg so of course im pissed about a 10+ mpg drop. Just had to get that of my chest. Thanks

Like I said this Monday he is back to driving his monstrosity. In addition, we are all going to hear him complain at work for at least two weeks.

We just drove almost 12 hours from Virginia to Michigan, then another 12 hours from Michigan to Virginia.
During my eight hours of driving out (from Breezewood, PA, entrance to I-76 turnpike) I got above 60mpg and when spouse finished up the trip we were still above 58mpg
On the return, I drove the entire 11.5 hours and I think the tank mpg was below 59
Highway speeds were from 60 miles per hour sometimes as high as 70 to 75 miles per hour.
Two times I have gotten 61.7 and 61.8
The first was on a trip 4 to 5 hours returning from NC to northern Virginia
The second was from near Washington, D.C., to Mathews County, VA

Congrats., Kathleen..I yearn for the 50+ mpg's., but on short trips + Texas heat., can't really expect it. But with my 39-45 MPG it is still 3 times better then my Ford Explorer ever got. Good Job

Last week, I finally broke the 60 mpg barrier with a new personal tank record of 60.3 mpg (441.8 miles / 7.325 gallons). My previous high was a heartbreaking 59.6 mpg that stood as my high since November of 2004. Oddly enough, the MFD was only (only?!?) displaying 57.4 mpg, so I was quite pleasantly surprised at my calculated results.

 

Way to go Kathleen and kjb. This summer I'm working mightily to join the >= 60 mpg club, too. I'm envious!

 

Alas I think I have way too many hills to ever get there. I'd be happy if I could get this current tank over 54 (it fell this morning to 53.8) and that might be my record for a while. Congrats though. I'm envious.

Apparently i could use some advice with the mpg thing.

On semi-long trips, say 200 miles, I've been averaging 52-55 mpg but around town, driving no more than 35-40 mph I've been getting about 32-38 mpg. Aren't we suppose to get better milage around twon?

I read in the forum that below 40 mph we are using all or primarily the battery for power. According to my info both the battery and the motor is pushing my car at slow speeds. I rarely, if ever, see the car solely on the battery....not that I'm complaining you understand

Just curious.
