Anyone else had this problem: the upper glove box lid no longer springs open when I push the button. It releases, but I have to lift it to get inside. This is unhandy when driving and looking for sunglasses, etc.

It happened once before and appeared to be related to a slight rise in the seam between the upper dash and the curved part of the glove box lid. The dealer did something probably very simple, to snap it back. It'd be nice to be able to do that myself but I'm afraid of forcing some plastic part and breaking something off.

Bob, as I recall a while back, there is a spring which lifts the door and the spring can pop out of it's holder. You need to remove the upper box to get at the spring (search for instructions for removing the dash and it should include removing the box). But if your car is still in warranty, you might want to get the dealer to repair it. As I recall, the person with the problem before got a new box because the plastic retainer for the spring was broken.

    Hope this helps a little.

Bob, I had the same problem. The spring was still there but the plastic knob was broken off of a part. It was replaced at the dealer under warranty.

There's a thread containing a "discovery and discussion" between a guy named priusinterested and me at the end of March. We had both noticed the slight rise in the dash at the seam with the glove box.

I removed my glove box and discovered that two notches in the plastic on the back of the glove box (one on each side), which had held in place the tension springs that caused the lid to be raised, had become useless because the plastic adjoining them had broken away under the pressure. On the right-hand side, this in turn allowed the end of the spring to press upwards under the dash, eventually causing it to rise slightly. Mystery solved.

priusinterested got his replaced, but had to appeal to Toyota after being turned down once. I was also turned down under the terms of my (Toyota) extended warranty, which excludes "all interior trim". I argued in a phone call with Toyota that the rear of the glove box, bearing mechanical parts, is NOT "trim", but got nowhere.

I haven't followed up yet, but am going to take it to a different dealer soon who may "just do it".

I doubt a dealer would quibble about it under the original 3/36 warranty.

BTW, mine is an '04. I said at the time I didn't know if that poorly-designed thing had been re-designed for '05 and/or '06, as I'm sure Toyota had to replace a lot of glove boxes. Yours is the first post that answers my question, and it means there'll continue to be a lot of box replacements. Apparently an amount of time has to elapse before that plastic suffers sufficiently from "plastic fatigue" for those little ears to break off.

I noticed mine, the top lid warp and raised a little bit,
about 2/10 of an inch. It used to be aligned perfectly
with the silver vent piece. The open buttons are fine.
If it raise any further, am gonna make some noise at
    Toyota.

Even if the dash doesn't raise any farther, your spring still doesn't work to raise the glove box lid.

I had my upper glove box replaced in February 2006. It's possible that I tried to close it with something too big in it, or perhaps the spring just failed. Either way, I took it to the dealership and they replaced it under warranty. I'm curious how much it would have cost out of warranty...It is interesting to hear that other people had this component fail too...

But Bob's original post doesn't say what year his car is, nor does his profile info. How did you draw the conclusion that his car is newer than 2004?

Actually, Bob's join-date of January 2004 suggests that his car is also a 2004.

Yep, it has happened to mine, too. I'm going to check the spring per the advice above. I think it happened after they did a repair on my screen, but I'm past the 3/36 warranty and into my extended warranty period.

This happened to me today as well, I am sure it was fine yesterday. My 3/36k warranty runs out in exactly 996 miles, so I'll be taking it to the dealer ASAP.

It has just happened to my '04 after this heat wave. And I am using the heat shield! It is going to Toyota very quickly!

:( Same problem. Parts ordered couple of weeks ago when I had the 20,000-mile service performed and the SSC-60C Steering Column Safety Recall done. Will report repair when it's completed.

Same problem here - in Mass. - and with HeatShield. Dash warping & upper glove box opens only about 50%. Seems to be worsening, but out of warranty. :(

Ours stopped working also, and we're out of the 3/36 warranty. Discussed with the service mgr and had to return to him three times, but Toyota finally agreed to repair it under the extended warranty. They quoted cost for parts at $300. It's scheduled to go into the shop Monday, so will report further afterwards.
