Rolling slowly towards my garage tonight, I pushed the OFF button while still moving, and the car STOPPED!

I mean, it stopped: the engine cut off, it went into Park and dark. Kind of a jolt!

Not sure I like this: hope the Stop Button doesn't work at higher speed....

P.S. Don't ask why I pushed it

You must have been moving very slowly. I've never experienced this when moving. Usualy, just touching the power button does nothing when moving. Pressing and holding will do an emergency shutdown, even if you're moving fast.

at low enough speeds for it to Pin.. it will try. Anything above... maybe 5 or 8mph and it will not react to the start button. If you are traveling at high speeds and hold it for about 4 seconds, it will go into an electrical shut off mode. all manual.. car shuts off.. you coast in N with manual stearing and breaks with minor assist. the backup (one of) sytem i'm guessing.

Nothing other than you will have to turn around to go get it. However, if you turn off the car you will not be able to start it back up again.

You will also get an indicator warning you that the key is out of range.

While driving on a 400-mile round trip on the second day of Prius ownership, my 20-year-old son and I were wondering what would happen if two Priuses swapped their keys while moving. (Toss 'em across through open windows.)

Now we know that both cars would just complain of keys out of range.

    We're both techies...whattya gonna do...

In industry, such a feature is known as an E-STOP, or an emergency stop button. It is similar to turning the engine off in other cars. When my Honda Accord threw its timing belt at 70+( ), I had to turn the car off, which of course meant power everything, including brakes, steering, windows, etc. Fortunately I was able to get over to the side before being hit.

If you push the button that way, it is supposed to turn off. That is what it is designed to do.

Nope. That won't happen at 70mph. You have the hold the POWER button for 3 seconds before it'll go into ACC mode.

Yea i've done a lot of testing with the power button.

At speeds Equal or below 2mph, the car WILL shut of and be placed in Park if you hit the Power button.

Anything over 3mph, the Power button does nothing with a quick depress.

If you press and hold for about 4 seconds, the car will shut almost everything off INCLUDING power steering and regen braking. So the car is a lot harder to steer and brake. This will initiate at any speed above 2mph.

You are quite right. I was referring to my '91 Honda Accord (not my Prius!)...I had to shut it down when it threw the timing belt at 70mph by just turning the key. It was kind of scary, but I was able to get over to the shoulder ok.

A question along these lines. Both my wife and I have had engine runaways in other cars both parked and moving on the highway. What we did was just shut the car off with the key. HOW could the Prius be shut off in a emergency situstion? Will the power button shut the engine down in motion? and how fast? when this happened to me in another car the engine stoped and I had to use more force to steer but the car engine stopped in less than a second. The throttle was almost wide open. Any one have to kill the engine in a emergency in a Prius?

If you decide to perform this experiment, could you videotape it and post the video for us to view? :)

Just press and hold the Power Button for about 4 seconds. The car will enter ACC mode, meaning power steering and all regen braking will turn off. Manual braking is still readily available, but it is quite harder to steer.

The only power being used is from the small 12v battery. Not the hybrid battery. The ICE, elec motor, and hybrid battery are all turned off.

It's actually an interesting state you end up in - you're in ACC mode, but in "N", a state you can't normally reach. The dashboard is blank, except for the gear indicator on its own.

When you reach a standstill, you can press "P" to park, and the gear indicator vanishes, putting you back into the normal ACC mode. You can't reselect "N" (without going to IG-ON or READY).

While on a 12 hour drive yesterday, we were discussing what would happen if the Power button was pressed while driving. Glad we know without having to test it :)

Can the car be restarted while still moving or do you need to stop and completely turn off first?
