50K Maint. Cost and Details

Each dealer is an Independent businessman, Toyota cannot keep them honest. Every so often you should go to your most honest dealer for recalls, TSBs, and software updates, other than that, any competent mechanic is fine. Even Do It Yourself, if you are competent and keep records.

50k is not a major service. Rotate tires and Oil and filter change. 120k is a major service. There is no reason to line the mechanics pocket with what they wish you would replace. The only additional service I see frequently mentioned is drain and fill the ATF WS in the transaxle, routinely. (every 60,000, every 90,000, whatever you choose, just routinely)

Check installation of driver’s floor mat
Clean cabin air filter (solar power ventilation system only)
Inspect and adjust all fluid levels
Replace engine oil and oil filter 1
Rotate tires
Visually inspect brake linings/drums and brake pads/discs
Note:
Driving in heavy traffic, on dirt roads or in urban, dusty or desert areas may shorten the life of the cabin air filter. Replacement may be needed if you notice reduced air flow from the air conditioner and heater or if the windows fog easily when you use the Fresh mode. Consult your dealer if any of these conditions occur.

Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads:
Inspect ball joints and dust covers
Inspect drive shaft boots
Inspect engine air filter
Inspect steering linkage and boots
Tighten nuts and bolts on chassis and body

1 Reset the oil replacement reminder light (“MAINT REQD”) or the message “OIL MAINTENANCE REQUIRED” on the
multi-information display after maintenance at every 5,000 miles.
2 Perform these service items only if you drive primarily under the conditions indicated.

 

Again, every single dealer is an independent business. There IS no Toyota price, just the price each dealer wants to charge you.

My dealer, whom I like, would charge $56. But they have low overhead and cheap labor. I have not spent serious time in AZ since 1977.

 

welcome! i pay about a hundred bucks for oil and filter, and tyre rotate at the local mobil station. all prices are local, even at the dealers. all you can do is cll around and ask. some dealers have coupons on their websites.

$20 for oil change labor and new filter. $23 for Mobil 1 I take with me and the tires are done at Costco.

There are some deals to be had, even in the Bay Area.

 

but how much if you have them do everything? after all, as you know, @NutzAboutBolts will tell you that you overpaid for labor.

But to your point it would be about $100 if the tire rotation was included. They upcharge for 5W-30 which the last time I went the said they would have to stop by the o'reillys first to get the oil.

Pays to call ahead and setup the appointment.

If anything other than DIY is probably too much for @NutzAboutBolts. But where else can I get overpriced coffee and understand how "attractive" a harvest brown interior is on the new gen 4's. @Coast Cruiser says they are all the rage!!!

Jimbo is exactly right. Toyota dealers are independent car sales places. And in my experience talking with Toyota Corporate, they pretty much don't give a darn how the dealers run their business. All I kept hearing is, "Dealers are an independent business, and we have no control over them." Dealers set their own prices for repairs/service, and make up their own "maintenance list of services", of which most items are totally unnecessary.

Oil change at Toyota dealers in my area. 3 different dealers, and 3 different prices:

And they can (and do) change the prices at any time. I think that's why I never see a price "list" anywhere. (Except for the occasional online coupon that bisco mentioned. Or I will get a coupon in the mail.)

Tire rotation is usually $30. But then some dealers include balancing the tires, so that jacks it up to $50 or $60. (I go to a local tire shop that rotates for free.)

bisco, it's good you found a reliable Mobil station that knows how to work on a Prius. I never see a Prius being worked on, in any of the gas stations around here. I doubt if they even have the correct oil filter.

 

I save the coupons mailed from all local dealers as they will price match. Oil change on sale is $39.95 reg. $49-$59 . I only do what Toyota says to do and I clarify " is this a dealership recommendation or Toyota Corp maint. requirement?" However today I got hosed even clarifying what I wanted. My 2012 - V has 96,000 and needed the oil change. $39.95 with price match Service rep proceeded to tell me that Toyota recommends the all fluids be drained and flushed, $755. My standard response Dealership or Toyota? TOYOTA! " Let me get my book out of the car and show me?" He looked all through and could only show that I could do the engine/inverter drain/fill early instead of 100,000 as I was already here. I agreed and then got a bill for $310 which included a $49.85 flush kit for both the engine coolant and inverter. I called and left a message for my rep to return my call and explain the flush charges.....still waiting three hours later. This same drain/fill at the dealership across town is $79.95 each system, engine and inverter. I want my $99 flush money back.

 

Do you still have original tires? Many dealerships will rotate for free if you bought your car there. Look for a coupon $19.99 or ask them to match a local store. Tires are usually rotated for free where you buy them. I buy at Costco and shop while they rotate.

 

Probably should have waited at the service dept and asked about the extra charges, before paying?

One ex-mechanic told me, that some dealers don't even do the "flush". (Takes too much time; need a special machine, etc.) They do a simple drain & refill but charge you for an expensive phony flush.

I keep the skinny Maint Schedule booklet that came with my car, in the trunk. I'm going to carry it with me and show the "service advisor", and have him sign it. I'm only getting service that is recommended in the book.
Most of the service advisors I have come across, are very young people, and they work on straight commission.

I've seen them take advantage of the elderly, and most women, and anybody else that doesn't have a basic working knowledge of vehicle maintenance.

Many are just plain crooked and dishonest.

 

my guy is iranian, and can fix anything. people even bring their power equipment, off road vehicles and golf carts.
