Sold the Prius on Saturday, driving a Ford Taurus

    Went back to work for a company that provides a company car, a Ford Taurus POS. They pay for the car, insurance & gas.

    Sold my '05 Prius to Carmax for 23K, not bad considering that a local Toyota dealer offered me 18.5K (didn't even consider it...) I paid 26K for it, so 3K for driving it 10 months is pretty good, most cars would lose much more value when driven off the lot.

    If things change in the future, a Prius will be the first car considered. I miss it already.

    I understand your reasoning for selling the Prius; why continue with the big loan payment and insurance expense when you don't have to, right.

    On the other hand, I'm sure you are missing your car. From a fuel efficiency standpoint, is there a vehicle out there that's more utilitarian AND fun to drive? Few if any. :)

    Yup, plus you can park them _anywhere_ and not worry or care about the abuse that they will incur.

    I have a friend that has a similar situation… One day, someone decided to use the back of his Taurus as a guard rail. He didn’t mind a bit.

    Yeah, maybe you can pitch it with some power that be in your company. Tell them some cities are replacing their entire parking meter maid fleets with the Prius for long term savings. If your job requires high mileage driving, and you're not the only person in the company doing it, it is not a far fetched idea.

    I drove a new Taurus every year for well over a decade. Very ugly car, wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. But boy did I love it. :D Why you say? :huh:

    It’s Free!
    No car payments!
    No insurance payments!
    Little or no time in shop for maintenance (because they were always new)!
    No gas bills!
    No buying tires!
    Don’t need to wash it yourself!
    Don’t care if someone runs into it!
    Don’t need to change your own oil!
    Can run the absolute p-ss out of it!

    And probably a lot more that I can’t think of right now.

    Yes sir ree Bob, How I do love …… Company cars! :D :D :D

    Thanks for all the thoughts - yes, it's a hideous car to drive, but putting 23,000 back in the bank was too attractive to pass up. Insurance here runs me about 1,800 a year, so even though the Prius was paid for, it would still continue to cost me, even if I only drove it occasionally.

    The company has run the numbers and it works better for them to do the fleet thing, rather than pay mileage and/or car allowance. This might change as gas prices continue to climb.

    Grasshopper, sounds like you may have worked for the same company :)

    My company cars have been hit twice in the past - once parked in front of my house and once while I was stopped in traffic, I gotta admit I was a lot more even tempered than when my personal cars have been hit in the past.

    I'll check in everyonce in awhile, I'm still a Prius fan, just no longer an owner.

    Losing only $3000 is especially good when you consider that someone buying one new now gets a $3,150 tax credit. So if you could buy a new Prius for the same $26,000, you essentially got that much back.
