Long ago, there was a thread about IBM or some other company having some mass layoff with "it's the economy stupid!" in the title. It seems to have vanished for some reason.

So, I'm starting another. Let's keep politics out of this. I don't want this thread moved to the political forum like some of the others that have "vanished".

I'll start Cisco Reportedly Will Ax Up To 14,000 Jobs, Or 20% Of Staff | Stock News & Stock Market Analysis - IBD. Yowza!

Didn't turn out to be as bad as reported:
Cisco slashes up to 5,500 jobs - Aug. 17, 2016

That's still a lot of people. If the 14K numbers were really being discussed seriously internally, I wouldn't be surprised if Cisco announces more layoffs in the coming year or makes other moves to more quietly get rid of people instead of including them in the layoff bucket.

no fun, but at least in a good economy, you're likely to find a new job more quickly.

Well not all. Local (to me) Daniel Webster College will remain open and teaching students. If closed by ITT in the future, several local educational facilities have promised students they will allow them to transfer with full credit to complete their degrees.

I heard on the news, that the Walmart layoffs are due to automation in the warehouses.... Robots taking over the work of humans. I guess it had to happen, eventually. But it's sad for all those people.

I stumbled across http://www.bizjournals.com/losangeles/news/2016/02/11/broadcom-plans-nearly-700-layoffs-in-irvine.html when looking thru the WARN report for CA at http://www.edd.ca.gov/jobs_and_training/warn/WARN-Report-for-7-1-2016-to-09-25-2016.pdf.

IBM: From Firing To Hiring Spree was surprising. One has to wonder how much of it really was cutting from areas they felt were non-growth, non-core, not profitable, etc. and hiring in areas they considered hot vs. trying to reduce deadwood, bad or "bad" performers or simply a form of age discrimination (i.e. getting rid of expensive workers and replacing them w/cheaper ones).

New round of HPE software layoffs begins | ZDNet

Then a friend of mine at Oracle reported a big layoff recently, he used the words "largest". He said all his lunch buddies got laid off. I stumbled across Oracle Corp. Layoffs - TheLayoff.com and he confirmed many comments there are true. He said the enterprise space isn't doing that well, in general.

I also found out about NetApp takes axe to hundreds of jobs | ZDNet today.

Is there any sort of regional employment metrics?

The reason I ask is I've seen a lot of 'hot seat change' announcements as various noted designers and engineers switch from one company to another. If someone loses a job and remains on unemployment for a while it is different from someone who just changes the company name on their pay stub.

it's unfortunate, with all of our technology, that we cannot track people going from unemployment to no longer collecting to hopefully employment.

It's the unemployment rate. One can get into analysis paralysis by going into too much depth on how it is calculated. Or one can take it at face value, that is an imprecise tool but the best we have given the data that we have.

This has been a declining number since the Great Recession. The rate for the Silicon Valley is below 4% which is well under the national average. As judged byhome prices and anecdotal rush hour traffic in my area, I'd say the economy has been on an upward trend in my local neighborhood.
Are you sure you want anyone to have the ability to track people to this degree?

We live in a country where census takers are shot by some.
For any tracking to work, people need to be willing to be tracked.

i guess it depends on the amount of intrusion. keeping the unemployment office notified might not be too bad.
yes, the economy is good here as well. it's this problem in the center of the country that has us where we are today.

Yes, see tables at Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment Summary , for example.

Side note: You can also look at WARN notices like the PDFs at Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) for CA or ESDWAGOV - Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) for WA.

I recall that for a company I worked for before w/a mass layoff, the WARN notice wasn't available ahead of time. It was filed the same day as the layoff announcement itself. Since there's a 60 day requirement in the above two states, IIRC, the laid off workers were still given 60+ days of pay.

Well, the ax for fell for this guy: Microsoft's latest layoffs take down Bryan 'Like a Boss' Roper | Windows Central.

Oracle again: Oracle lays off more than 1,000 employees | ZDNet. Not sure of the total number and how many of the 450 are included in the supposed 1,800.
