I have an elderly relative that's hanging up their license that has asked me to sell their 2005 Prius that has only 12,000 miles on it. Its not been run in a month or so. The car has been garage kept since new and driven fairly regularly until this summer.
I looked up the KBB value and got just over $5k, but I see high mileage models in well used condition selling for a lot more.
My plan is to go get the car, have it properly detailed and serviced at the dealer and find it a new home.
I thought about keeping it but I don't need another car and even at $5k its more than I have to spend on a car I don't need.

Secondly, I've never driven one of these. When I went to check on the car I figured out pretty fast how to insert the key fob in the slot, and that I needed to step on the brake and hit the power button but is there anything else I need to know before driving this car 200 miles home to my house?
Also, how do I navigate the screen on the dash to get to something that shows me the state of battery charge as I drive?

welcome! not really. if the car started, than the 12 volt battery is okay. check the tyres pressure and the oil level.
on the touch screen you have two alternatives. i forget what the touch button is labeled, energy or something? but one of the two screen options will show you the battery level.
however, you drive it like a regular car, and there is no need to keep an eye on anything except the speedo. as far as pricing is concerned, low mileage on the hybrid drive battery is not a good thing. they like regular use, and its possible that it will have to be replaced in the near future.
    all the best!(y)

Wow a hidden treasure from 2005. I'd buy it for $5000. Like a new car from the past

Good find there. If you can sell it for 5 or 6 I'd do it. Start out at 6k or 7k and keep dropping the price till someone makes you an offer you can't refuse. I'm not big on low miles cars to me they spell work

I'm seeing cars this age with 140K on them for that kind of money, I looked around both on CL and a few local lots and anything under 100K is bringing 9K and up. One lot had an 05 with 110K for $10,500. It was gone in two days.
If they can get that much for a 110K car with minimal options, I should be able to get pretty close or more than that for one that's loaded with only 11K?

I also decided to have a local dealer there go over the car completely to make sure it would be up to the long drive home. They replaced the 12v battery and did a full check of the main battery and gave it a clean bill of health. I also had them change the oil and do a full service while it was there.

I like the idea of the extreme mileage these are supposed to get but there's no way it'll replace my truck or my full size car unless a Prius can tow a small boat.

Theres a button on the lower left of the screen "consumption" or something like that, depends on which screen you're on. That toggles you back and forth.

Yes a prius can tow a small boat depending on what you consider small . But if you can get 10k for yours then its not even a question---sell it.
