VW Faces $17B Fine for Emissions Scam

    The new Cruze has a 1.6L diesel option now. Don't know if it will offered in the new hatchback. That's it in terms of non-luxury brands at this time. BMW started offering diesels a few years back, and Mercedes had them for a long time. There is also the Grand Cherokee with a diesel option.

    Some Audi's got caught up in this.

    Understood. I guess I was getting at that there really are no affordable diesels on the market currently besides the Cruze diesel...

    The Cherokee Diesel is well over 50k (crazy expensive), Audi's are very pricy too.. No point in mentioning Mercedes...$$..

    The reason VW was able to corner the diesel market in the US was because they were the only affordable brand to offer one. The Cruze diesel didn't come to market until VW started cheating. Now VW can't cheat or may not even bring a diesel back. Which leaves GM with an opportunity here. A good hybrid would be a better option in most cases, but increased efficient options helps.

    The Grand Cherokee has always been crazy experience. The lack of diesel competition in the US has allowed those to offer them to make more by only putting the diesel in trim models. The diesel Cruze may have pushed VW into selling a base trim diesel Jetta for the first time.

    like i said - it was ~a yr ago .... he loves it - wife doesn't ... all he said was freeway constant mpg about 50 (i never googled what epa claims) , and it has the 'pee tank' as part of its emissions ' system - sorry for going OT.

    According to the auto testing websites, our neighbors' Highway MPG is maybe 10% above what EPA claims. Quick Segway - Doesn't Range Rover import their diesel version as well? Surely it can't be as unreliable is there gasser.

    The 10% seems to be what the EPA's diesel pessimism on the test can be.
    Yes to the Range Rover diesel. It's engine might show up in a F150.

    One alternative to liking posts here is subscription to Anna. Improb. Res. Where doctors' waiting rooms provided that magazine, I have invariably felt more confident about treatment quality.

    Toyota TM -1.17% has decided to drop diesel engines from its new C-HR compact in the wake of Volkswagen’s emissions scandal and will probably do the same for future model renewals, the carmaker’s second-ranking global executive said on Thursday.

    The Japanese automaker decided “within the last six to 12 months” not to offer a diesel version of the car, unveiled at the Paris auto show, because demand for the powertrain technology is falling sharply, executive vice president Didier Leroy told Reuters in an interview.

    What's interesting is that I hear all the time that Europeans don't care about the scandal.

    Seems that either that's wrong, or at least that's wrong among the subset of Europeans that buy Toyotas.

    Ultimately Europe must end its diesel addiction. To do this diesel and petrol vehicle emissions limits should be equivalent, and member states should equalise taxes on diesel vehicles and fuel the biases in favour of diesel must end. Electromobilty will ultimately solve the air pollution crisis in our cities; but the measures outlined in this report will make an important contribution to remediating the current problems in the short term and also put the automotive industry on a more sustainable long term path.

    Wow, maybe we should be selling our worst guzzlers over there - cars with crankcases vented right onto the streets like in the good old days - pre 1960's since they don't seem to think it matters ....
    Ironically it seems like there was a time where there was an indignance - as though Europeans cared more about clean air in the US did. Sure didn't see that one coming

    In recent discussions I've seen, cleaner for Europeans means less CO2.

    So far, 311,209 owners have registered for the settlement offer. Another 3,298 owners have opted out of the deal, giving them the option to sue individually or take other actions, attorneys handling the class-action lawsuit said. The deadline for opting out ended on Sept. 16.

    Consumers soon will be able to begin collecting payments for their vehicles if they prefer a buyback. They have up to two years to decide which option to seek, and some are reportedly waiting to find out if VW eventually will come up with a repair plan that the EPA and California regulators will approve.
