Ok, for the most part, due to the replies on my last thread, I have been a little scared off from buying my previously mentioned car today without a independent inspection first. I appreciate everyone's input tremendously. If you're not totally sick of me yet i would like to introduce you to possible car #2 which is similarly priced, has lower miles, but may have a similarly conspicuous history.

It is a 2015 Prius 2, 7600 Miles, Toyota CPO, and they are asking 18800 out the door. The the only major red flag that i am seeing is that this car has already had 2 owners. It was originaly leased from the dealership where it is currently for sale, then sold at a Nissan dealership after 7 months (Toyota sales person says it was traded in for a Pathfinder there or something, not sure how he would know that info in first place), After sitting at Nissan for 4 months the car is sold to buyer 2. Buyer 2 has the car for 7 months, drives it 4k miles then, according to the sales person, decides to trade up to a 16 Prius at current Toyota dealer because he is taking the car "back to his country" and wanted the latest model because he thought it would depreciate slower. This dealer said he would be fine with me taking it for an independent inspection. Something that i am reluctant to do because i would likely need to take a whole day off of work. Does this car seem sketchy to you and would you all still recommend a independent inspection?

Thank you all very much for your time

Ask for a CARFAX, it only has 7,600 miles on it, so it's not even due for its first oil change! You just need to look for any accidents on the CARFAX.

thank you for the tip. 2 entireties; first is prep, second is,
"FOLLOW USED CAR DIRECTION SHEET,ADD "VEHICLE SERVICED" STICKER ~|~FUCDS; LOF; RESEARCH AND PERFORM ALL OPEN RECALLS; ~|~ "
This second service is on the same date as "Pre delivery inspection" on the Carfax when it arrived back at the dealership. Seem legit?

I'm only really looking at Priui that are competitively priced, are 2015s, and have low miles. I guess red flags such as this one's 2 owners are what is putting these cars in my price range. Any 2015 for sale right now is a little suspicious I would guess.

i think you're being a bit paranoid.:) i realize it's a major purchase, but i haven't seen any red flags yet.

What is the warranty for the CPO? You are not buying a brand new car. It could have been in an unreported accident (yes, that's a very real possibility) or it could have been abused by its two previous owners in the short time they owned them.

$19,000 for a used car is not small potatoes. You should still get the independent inspection. CPO is no guarantee that the stealership actually did all of the inspections and did them correctly. Otherwise you might be the proud new owner of a 19K lemon.

12 month 12k miles limited comprehensive. Although I think I will have more on the original comprehensive warranty and about 5 years left of limited power trans + hybrid component warranty.

The car still has the balance of the original warranties starting from the in service date so they will start to expire next year.

The service records are as expected. When I test drove my 2010 the salesman couldn't explain the HSA idiot light so the car took a trip to the Service Dept. and got another entry in the log.

Unless there is evidence of abuse or damage I'm agreeing with the guys. Let others' loss be your gain.

Something does not "smell right" about this. for ANY vehicle to have TWO owners in under 24 months is cause enough for SERIOUS SUSPICION in my book. Though it does not indicate any problem(s), it is absolutely cause for caution and due-diligence.

The short answer is, get ALL cars checked out by a mechanic qualified and experienced in checking out the car of interest. Imo and per my advisors, that's car buying 101.

It's also a very small portion of the purchase price. Not compelling, but notable.

IME, pre-Prius, the expense of all cars I've ever checked out was completely dwarfed by the lemons / repair expenses I thus avoided. Like 10:1

The Prius is much less risky. Yet I still had mine checked out. It is still a best practice, imo, until I learn otherwise.
