I was really looking forward to testing/driving the new Prius and saving all that fuel. Now i'm stuck with a 2016 Camry -- crusty old dinosaur aging 8 year old design with an even older crustier poor aging low tech engine with meh fuel economy.

would love a Hybrid Accord instead.

Does that mean that Prius sales are halted as well? I don't think sales were halted with the airbag recalls which in my opinion are much more dangerous.

Why not request a fuel reimbursement or a reduction in the cost of your vehicle rental to compensate you for your extra fuel expense?

That is a good question. When I gave the recall notice to a Toyota dealer service manager, he said their dealership can continue to sell the Prius because this is only an interim safety recall. After reading this recall, I disagree with the service manager. This is what is written in the defective airbag recall. I would be interested in learning your thoughts if it is permissible to sell, lease or rent defective vehicles.

Under Title 49, Section 30112 of the United States Code, a dealer cannot sell, offer for sale, or introduce or deliver for introduction in interstate commerce a new motor vehicle when it is aware that the vehicle does not comply with an applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or contains a defect related to motor vehicle safety. In addition, 49 Code of Federal Regulations §577.13 requires us to provide the following advisory: It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied.

The Toyota airbag recall document from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is here: http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/UCM539597/RCMN-16V672-9010.pdf

Let us know what your Toyota dealer did to compensate you. Toyota advised me that I must purchase a new 2016 Prius to fix a speedometer that will not select between English and metric units on my new 2016Prius.

Your current 2016 Prius won't let you select between miles and kilometers; but a new 2016 Prius will? What's going to be different on the replacement?

I just check at http://toyota.com/owners and my car is a candidate for the recall. Nice to see they have connected it to the recall data so quickly. So now just have to wait for the parts to become available mid next month.

Your 2016 Prius has a hill hold feature, you don't need to apply the parking brake when waiting for a light. Try taking your foot off the brake and you'll find the car hold it's place, no rolling back.

I would install the Toyota owners app and enter your VIN into it and register. Then see if your car is one of the affected ones.

    Good luck.

The new 2016 Prius has the Toyota software correction to allow for the selection between English and Metric affecting the speedometer, odometer, and the navigation unit. Toyota refuses to fix this issue under warranty. The only remedy Toyota offers is to purchase a new 2016 Prius if you need a speedometer with English and metric units. The 2016 Prius made in June and July 2016 had the English to metric unit fix but my Prius made in January 2016 did not. You can not purchase this as an option.

That's not very helpful of Toyota. Your dealer should have told you there are some GPS based speedometers that you might be able to use rather than buying a new car.

LIghten up Francis.... It's a funny recall that only idiots are at risk of. Apparently the cable to the linkage disengages so if it happens to you or I, since we actually use the parking brake we would realize 'that didn't feel right' and probably put the car in park before we get out to put our head under the tire.

Do you think you'll see a posted 120, and figure you need to make your dash numbers match the sign numbers? Before you know it you're at 110 mph, jamming on the accelerator wondering why you can't hit the 120 even though that's the limit....

I'd say it's a dumb issue to have, not a dangerous one. The more dangerous situation is that there's an idiot behind the wheel who doesn't realize the change.

My head under the tire might stop my Prius from inadvertently rolling backward or forward and then crashing. All Prius owners lives matter.

I am not the only person that will be driving this vehicle Living in Michigan, I also do not want a restriction of my vehicle being out of compliance with Canadian motor vehicle safety regulations. The Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations of Canada on page 81 under the heading “speedometers and odometers" states the “speedometer shall indicate the speed of the vehicle in kilometres per hour or in kilometres per hour and miles per hour. The unit or units of measurement shall be identified on the speedometer or at a location adjacent to it.” Read more: http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/PDF/C.R.C.,_c._1038.pdf

does canuck law apply in the US? did toyota violate something by selling this car in the US?

I get your point, I really do. It's a stupid issue to have. But if you're really concerned about it grab a sticky note and make a cheat sheet. I'll start one for you.... 120 = about 75 100 = about 62...... If you need time to finish it out, don't reply to this thread and use that time to make your cheat sheet instead.
