I took my Gen 4 Prius to my dealer for 15K service and was told of this recall. I was told the replacement parts won't be available until March 2017, and was offered rental (either Corolla or Camry) for the interim. I declined as I am the lone driver most of the time.

    September 14, 2016
PLANO, Texas, Sept. 14, 2016 – Toyota Motor North America, Inc., announced that it is conducting a safety recall of approximately 7,600 Model Year 2016 Toyota Prius vehicles in the U.S.

The involved vehicles are equipped with a front passenger air bag which contains stored, compressed gas in the inflator. A component in the airbag assembly may have been improperly welded and/or misassembled. If this occurs, the stored gas may escape without a deployment signal and result in the partial inflation of the air bag. This has been observed when the vehicle is parked and unoccupied for a period of time. An airbag that inflates in this manner can, under some circumstances, increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a crash.

All known owners of the involved vehicles will be notified by first class mail beginning in November. Toyota dealers will replace the front passenger air bag assembly with a new one at no cost.

If I understand the dealer correctly, they are offering to rent you a vehicle instead of providing complimentary equivalent transportation until they receive parts to repair the defective Prius airbag. Why should Prius owners pay for a rental vehicle in addition to our new cars sitting idle waiting for repair parts due to a manufacturer safety recall? If I wanted to pay for two vehicles, I would have purchased two vehicles.

Here is a page from the 5 page letter Toyota sent to its dealers.

To my reading it suggests that rental be at no charge to the customer, and the dealer gets $35 per day reimbursement from Toyota. But for no more than 4 days, unless special arrangements have been made in advance.

Of course I could be reading hat all wrong.

I meant to say "free" rental in my original post. I still decided to decline a free rental because I don't want to drive a Corolla or Camry for 6 months. I wan to drive my Prius...

I'll bet they would have backed off on that " free 6 month" offer if you accepted.

boo to renting out corollas and camrys
why can't they rent out a prius or at least another similar car.
renting out another car besides a prius will result in more gas purchases for that 6 months.

Mine is not in the DB. Interesting... Is it because of the production time? Or because of the trim? I noticed among people in this thread none of Prous Three (T) are on the list, but Two and Four are.

Is this for only newer generation Priuses or is this another airbag recall for all Prius's?

There is THIRD gen airbag recall, got a letter in July saying it would take some time for parts to become available, haven't heard anymore.

I'm really sceptical of OP's assertation that Toyota is saying to park their 2016's and drive a rental. For months? All of them??

Mothballing cars like that would cause a lot of disruption and mechanical problems too. Hoax??

post #3 shows the letter from toyota. 4 days free rental, then you need authorization. 6 months? that could get interesting.
iirc, people were being told not to drive their cars with defective takata airbag, but i don't recall free rentals. maybe in the high humidity areas?

Got a double whammy today when Toyota announced another recall and sure enough my VIN is included in this one as well.

    Title
Safety Recall G01 (Interim G11) - Interim Notice Certain 2016 - 2017 Model Year Prius Vehicles Parking Brake Cable
    Status
    Remedy Not Available
    Description
In the subject vehicles, there is a possibility that the parking brake could become inoperative. If this occurs and the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in a gear other than "Park" while the ignition is on, the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash. If this occurs and the driver exits the vehicle with the transmission in a gear other than "Park" while the ignition is on, the vehicle could roll away, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy
Toyota is currently preparing the remedy parts for this condition and will provide additional information as it becomes available. The remedy, when available, will consist of installing clips on the ends of the parking brake cables to prevent the ends of the parking brake cables from disengaging from the crank levers on the rear brake calipers.
