Just traded 2012 Prius for Jeep Grand Cherokee and already regretting it. The Jeep is nice...real nice but the 22 miles to gallon is killing me. I am so use to the economical Prius and the great gas mileage. The jeep has the electric start/stop but it only improves mileage by 2 mpg or so.

Now I am thinking of trading the Jeep back for a Prius Prime but I know I will lose money doing so. Has anyone else suffered from Prius withdrawal besides myself?

I had a smart fortwo for a while. I was annoyed it was idling at traffic lights. 38mpg was my lifetime which isn't bad but when you're used to 47-50mpg in a 5-door liftback versus 38mpg in a 2-dr/2-seater car, it puts things into perspective.

Can you just sort of return it and say that you don't like it? Not sure how that works. Never bought a brand new car.

It doesn't work that way, unless you are willing to lose a very substantial amount on the return. Merely driving a new car off the lot knocks a lot of value off of it, making it impossible to resell at the new car price.

Did that back in 2009. Traded for an Eclipse and realized that 24 mpg highway wasn't worth it. In the process of going back and forth right now, need an AWD for convenience sake vs having to put chains on and off every day just to go over Donner and in the market for a cheap cheap 4WD vs trading the Prius for a Renegade or Patriot.

Similar reasons are why I've kept my (rarely used) old Durango 4x4. Haven't missed the terrible fuel economy, but when the roads get bad this winter, the old hag will be a welcome site!

Crosstrek hybrid or if you want to stick with Toyota... Rav 4 hybrid perhaps?

I did hear the Rav 4 hybrids have been outselling the Price for a while

MPG sucks on the Crosstrek and I did look at Rav Hybrid but too pricy and the AWD may not be enough for where I would take it, wife has a 2014 CRV and it struggles if its really bad and not plowed. Being able to lock 50/50 in the Jeeps is a big plus and I've heard of stories on the Highlander Hybrid rear end overheating when taxed. The regular Rav4 is tempting with the 50/50 lock ability but am leaning towards an old Ford Ranger or Durango for under 4k.

Not to mention people going to Tahoe on 80 don't know how to drive in snow and i'd rather damage a beater than my DD.

I was on a crazy roll where I traded my 2013 Prius Three for a Hemi Charger, traded the Charger for a 2015 Persona, traded the Persona for a 2015 Ram 1500 crew cab Big Horn 4x4.....and low and behold I am once agin back in the fray with a 2016 Prius three w/ ATP :)

...oh and I bought the wife a 2014 (lease actually) Prius v Three something like 18 or so months ago...which come time will most likely be replace with another Prius or a Prime or Rav Hybrid ;)

Yeah I probably lost a few bucks with all that buying and selling like a fool but a Prius makes the most sense for my commute...should have kept my 2013 now that I think about it. Lol. Oh well we live and learn!

Best of luck, and it doesn't cost anything but some of your time to head on over to you fav toyota dealership and get a quote and an appraisal
    For a trade...

We owned a regular Rav XLT 4x4 (wife's car) prior to her 2014 v Three, want to talk about disgusting mpg for a 4 banger....I'm talking 18ish +\-... it was terrible! I would only ever consider a Hybrid Rav if we went that route again in the future.

Prior to my mopar / hybrid stage (lol) I owned 4 Subaru's. I spent a lot of time up in the northeast mountains in them in the dead of winter and the mud season and they are pretty much unstoppable. Just trying to give you options and I hear the crosstrek hybrid is decent in mpg's. It is not anywhere near Prius territory but you mentioned Donner pass, might be one of your best options if mpg's and AWD are your priority.

And an older Durango? Really? Try 10-13 mpg..maybe..

Apologies to the OP, I thought I was responding to your reply... hopefully my reply with my experiences helps either way :)

I've taken my old Durango through treacherous places and weather and it's never failed me! It's heavy, built like a tank, and gets abysmal fuel economy :(

Them older Durangos did have a reputation of having one of the worst MPG's of any production SUV / truck on the market. Hummer like. Lol.

My Hemi Ram was stupid in that field as well. I never managed to get close to the rated mpg, couldn't even manage anywhere near the "city" rated mpg combined...

Oh wow. I had not realized. Saw a bunch on the Subie lot like 3 months ago when I was checking out an STI.

Subies are not known for great mpg's either though thats for sure, and yeah the crosstrek hybrid did only manage a couple mpg's over the ICE Crosstrek. Better but not Prius "better"..

I don't understand the purpose of this thread. If someone is concerned about making wise financial decisions, they wouldn't trade any vehicle for any other vehicle. You loose a substantial portion of a vehicles value whenever you do a dealer trade. For that matter, buying at the dealership is the most expensive way to purchase a vehicle.

Concerning MPG, the info is all over the internet and should have been on the window sticker in bold lettering to indicate that the Jeep only gets in the low 20s, so that should not have come as a surprise.

You'll never make back the money trading the Jeep in for a new Prius in fuel economy.

I usually say to drive a vehicle until the wheels fall off, but that is likely to happen in 5 years with the Jeep. I'd sell it ASAP private party and then buy something Japanese on CL.

i missed my prius when i switched cars with my wife when she had that long commute (she saved a couple of grands per year driving prius vs her RAV4). weird thing is RAV4 (V6 with AWD) made me drive way more aggressively (all that unused power!).

the part that was annoying was gas tank not even 50% bigger while the engine was almost 3x more thirsty. frequent fueling was a nuisance.

she got a job closer to home, so i have my prius back, i enjoy driving it more. makes me more relaxed and less likely to do crazy things.

I think I have the best of both worlds.

Not quite a Grand Cherokee but my wife's Liberty can drive through anything! It's her commute vehicle and her commute is 5 miles round trip so gas mileage isn't a concern for us.

    Prius withdrawal?
Uh...I tend to try to communicate while remembering what audience I'm speaking to....

Which means I hesitate to come in here and be too glowing about any change from Prius.

I recently traded my 2013 Prius for a Honda Fit EX. And I have to say.....I'm really enjoying the Honda Fit. I would say I like it on nearly every level better than The Prius...save one.

The Prius was more efficient and had better gas mileage.

If there is any withdrawal? It's when the low warning gas light illuminates and I have only driven 250 miles on the tank.
With the Prius, 250 miles was just a warm up.

I would say, I also sometimes miss the quiet refinement of a Hybrid system that allowed for electric travel at slow speed. There is some adjustment returning to a vehicle that keeps the engine running all the time.

    But besides those two aspects?

I can't say it's withdrawal as much as adjustment.
Of course I am going from Prius to Fit..so the gap in gas mileage is somewhat smaller. The Fit at least get's what is considered good gas mileage by ICE vehicle standards, even if my visits to the gas station have increased.

Might feel different if I went from Prius to Jeep Grand Cherokee.
