I was distracted today and bottomed out (not badly). I was going over a sunken(ish) manhole cover that drains the surrounding driveway between two businesses.

    Oops. Cell phones and cars...

Just to see if everything was ok, I hit the mechanic's place and put 'er up on the rack.

It wasn't a big deal, but in a few spots, near screws that hold two of the flat-ish plastic pieces that protect the underside of the car, there were cracks.

If I hit it five more times, I bet it would crack good. Maybe once more if I really slammed it. (Won't happen).

I'm referring to the two plastic covers closest to the front bumper (or maybe one of them was the underside of the front bumper), under the car.

I also find I have to be pretty careful pulling into parking spaces ! So easy to pull the front bumper over the curb and I hear the scratching !! Oh, the scratching! I wish I were better at that. I can't see how close I am, of course.

There are also some scratches / scrapes on the bumper where it starts to bend and go under the Prius. No biggie, that, except on re-sale I suppose. In three to ten years.

Not news to many, I'm sure, but to the others - yes, you can abuse the underside of your car, if you're not careful!

I've found taking care of the under side of the Prius to effect gas mileage. I do a lot of freeway mileage and above 55 every scratch down under is drag $$$ Don't believe me? Have your mechanic steam clean and wipe it down with a spray wax and check yourself.

It refer ing to the front lower bumber tray cover? That scraps over driveways and etc, ? It's made of thin soft plastic ! I fabricated 3/16 aluminum skid plate over the existing tray.hopefully that will last a while !

    No, I don't believe you ! Or, I'm doubtful.

consensus is it's negligible in most situations
perhaps you drive a lot of freeway miles and there's a little something there

    I think it's part number 12 here?

SPLASH SHIELDS for 2010 Toyota Prius

Strangely, a couple of parts sites (the above included) I tried don't have this part in stock.

Our's is looking semi-knackered, not too bad. Moderately abraded, a couple of places at edges it's gone right through. I'll maybe take it off preemptively, see what I can do. I have a bumper repair kit, with pre-cleaner, two-part goop and fiberglass mesh:

Might be this (Amazon.com link not happening)?

    upload_2016-10-20_10-9-18.png

Toyota part number: TO1228168 (Google this part number)

No comment on US Amazon site, and Canadian site has one negative comment, says it's not compatible. It is third party I'm sure. Hmmm.

All-in-all, it seems a real time eater trying to find this dang part, anyway. Anyone else find it??

Probably better to just cobble what you have back into shape, lol.

    Dude, that's awesome!

    --

for now, I just want to not abuse the thing.

What are people doing to NOT go over the curb when parking ?
Wish i had a camera in FRONT lol. probably could do it, don't have the cash.

a little thing that attaches to the bumper that makes a tiny sound to alert me would be cool.there must be some aftermarket thing to address this issue. Gotta hit amazon, i guess

    LOL ! :) :D:D:mad:

Well, according to this site, we can use the side mirrors as reference points. I can probably get this with a little practice.

Good points. Get your car in optimum position, then memorize a few alignment points.

When parallel parking with curb, I kinda like coming in a little too steep, sometimes. That way it's the tire's tread edge that contact first, there's no danger of rim scraping. I can then square-up with one or two back-and-forths.

I stop a little short. Even doing so is still less length out the back end of the parking spot than the urban assault vehicles that are all over the lot hanging out well over each edge ;).

When the wife drives the Prius and I have the "privilege" of riding in the passenger seat, I can tell she is used to driving our 4Runner and has no care for ground clearance:confused:.

My usual referencing of this has allowed me to drive to most things and keep the front from experiencing damage;). And hasn't led to any nights on the couch:).

Awareness to the ground clearance is the key and knowing what to avoid or how to approach helps.

Come to think of it, if I approach the driveway the wrong way, it scrapes too.
I'm just starting to figure that out.

The street is a quite steep hill at the bottom of the driveway; the driveway itself is a quite steep hill.

I think the one time I was coming DOWN the street-hill, and then immediately turned UP the driveway hill, the bumper sounded a scrape. Apparently, you shouldn't do *that in a Prius either.

Hasn't been a problem so far, but you know what, that's brilliant. Quoted for emphasis.

Pulled ours off and noted the parts number on it:

    toyota 76851-47030-A

Google that, and the US amazon site has the part for $132.71. Amazon Canada has it too, for a mere $398.62. :cautious:

I'm gonna use bumper repair kit on ours, on the worst spots:

Just holding on by a prayer:

    IMG_5727.JPG

Or maybe start with two part epoxy.

Parked close to the curb today (nose in), sat in drivers seat, looked at side mirrors to learn what 'safe' looks like. Think I've got this.

Notably, if I HAD pulled over the curb, the Prius DEFINITELY would have gotten a rotten scraping. Glad I checked !

Btw, $132 / $398 for the part ??!! I'm definitely going to take a little care when parking. !

    An overall pic, for reference:

I ended up using two-part epoxy on ours. One post had very minor blow out, another was pretty chewed:

Some folks repair torn bumpers by using an old, hot soldering iron to melt the thermoplastic. Wonder if that would work better than trying to add an epoxy layer? They even sometimes embed a piece of metal screening in the repair to strengthen the weld.

youtube soldering iron bumper repair melt - Google Search

Just be sure to work in a well ventilated area and have a fire extinguisher handy.

See you put plastic mesh in to strengthen your epoxy - nice repair - let's see how that does :)

Good info. My test on 250 mile drive cruise control @75 showed clean underside improved gas mileage in my 2005 Prius 3 mpg. Re ran the test many time. Don't neglect your undercarriage
