Don't let Bisco pull your leg...it was he who recommended that Toyota ditch the spare

But it is trips out of town when we count on having the generous cargo space. There is no way I want a donut spare, jack, and tools added to the things I want to pack.

I really would have considered a PIP but no spare = no sale for me.

Well here we are in August of 2016 and Prius sales are slumping. Toyota is offering $2,000 off to get them moving. I have to wonder how much of that push-back from buyers is due to the lack of a spare tire on some models.

The car comes with the Jack and lug wrench, it's just the spare itself. I bought an inexpensive pump, a small plier/cutter set, gloves and a tire plug kit. About $25 total and very compact.

I have my name in on a Tesla ....

My wife drives the plug in...i was worried for a while about her driving with no spare..

I asked her if she got a flat how would she fix it.

    She said call AAA.

I asked her if she would try to fix it.

She said yes, she would call AAA.

I guess she is right...and I should not worry about no spare.

Anyways, back to the theme of my original post...Teslas do not come with spares either

As I think I've stated, I cannot think of a single EV/PHEV sold in the US that comes with a spare tire.

Oddly, the Australian Leaf DOES come with a spare: Spare tire down under! - My Nissan Leaf Forum. Too bad it's not even an option on the US model. :(

^ Hanging a spare from the underside (as shown in the link) is a relatively simple solution; good to see someone's doing it. Very appropriate they're doing a down under spare, down under.

For PiP owners in NJ, I've posted an ad for the donut spare I used for mine.

I picked up a spare through EBay. I got it to carry when travelling. But I leave it in the garage when I'm here in town.

I also carry a plug kit and a compressor.

I also ride a motorcycle, and obviously you can't carry a spare on a motorcycle. But I carry a plug kit and a small compressor. I've plugged my motorcycle tires many times. One time I got a nail in my brand new rear tire (approx $200 worth of new tire) and I put a plug in it. I decided I wasn't ready to replace the tire already so I rode on it for awhile. Then a few months later, I got another nail in the same tire, so I plugged it again. A few months later, I got another nail so I put in another plug. I wore that tire out until it was slick. None of those plugs ever leaked.

Erk, didn't know that - salesman said not a word (no surprise there, he wanted his commission). Good to know.

My salesman didn't know that there was a charging cable. He took me to the parts counter to ask about getting a charging cable after I completed the sale. Later that night when I was going through the back of the car I just bought, I found the charging cable. :)
