Well, since Danny's the one who makes the rules and he's the one who has been considering the change, I kinda think the rule doesn't apply.

    :)

My vote would be yes, but with a twist. You would need to request which subforum access you want. So you can request Prius only and would not see any of the posts from the other two subforums (Camry, Highlander, etc) or you can request to have access to all of them.

    Armchair moderators

I like the idea of having one main forum and then portals leading to the individual models forums.

I can't seem to find anything about that in the manual. ;)

I like Danny's idea, I say YES to the boards combining. B)

and you have a problem because...?

I mean, if people are just going to use VNP instead of VANP, then this thread will never get read cause, let's be honest, those who selectively choose the subforum to view, usually won't check website suggestions that often.

Thus, if we were to combine forums, we don't need the selective VNP since FHOP will be on the main page and if we were to enter PC, then VNP will be everything else. Ditto for CC or HHC.

I think that combining some of the forums would be good like FHOP. Regional and State clubs of all Hybrids might be fun. I would still like Prius Only forums. Some of the technical stuff is different from car to car because of the programing of each.

I agree with DaveinOlyWA: If it slows down the site I would not like it. I also agree with Henry: I'd like to be able to see Prius-only (plus FHOP) stuff. I have no particular interest in other hybrids.

I must say that I'm pretty surprised by the response to this idea. You can ask Tony or Evan, I was expecting a backlash from PriusChatters when approached with this idea.

I appreciate all of the feedback, and hopefully we can make this move by the end of the summer (the technology to do it isn't available yet).

    Additional feedback is gladly accepted!

yes, at local "clubs" it would be easier to meet up with other hybrid owners and future owners that are considering different hybrids... would be nice to see all kinds of hybrids and know whats out there!

I don't mind changing my book marks if he does that.

I like the idea - particularly from the perspective of the "increasing number of toyota hybrids" argument already presented.

When every toyota and honda (and more) is offered in a hybrid form, it will become less about just owning a Prius, and more about being enthusiasts in the hybrid technology and point of view.

I think combining the forums, with the caveat of specific domains for each vehicle (prius.hybridchat.com), would be in line with what we are hoping for in the future - an onslaught on hybrid ownership!

Although I'm an avid reader and not much of a poster, I like the idea of the change.

    1. I'll chime in again now...I think it's Danny's show and he's gotta do what works best for him, particularly if it doesn't really hurt the existing groups and users. From an administrative point of view, it sounds like it's definitely easier and less time consuming to have a single board with individual portals. Is it also better for purposes of selling advertising? If so, it seems like a no-brainer to me.

    2. The main concern I'm hearing is that some chatters want to stay totally focused on their own car model, and not have to wade through even more posts that have nothing to do with their car. It seems to me Danny's addresed that issue with the portal idea. So long as View New Posts (VNP) doesn't go outside the Prius boundaries, there's no reason for anyone to be concerned that having a single board will make the priuschat experience any more burdensome (no matter how obsessive-compulsive some of us may be about it :D ). Is it also possible to set up custom controls whereby a person could manage or screen out which forums one wanted to view in VNP (the same way you can screen out certain posters)?

    3. I think Danny may still be thinking too small in terms of how many of the existing forums should become general forums and how many should be unique to each model. When I look at the existing forums, the only ones that seem truly model specific are the Main, Modifications, Care & Maintenance, and Audio forums. Almost everything else could be general forums, and in particular, any sales, political, environmental, free for all (pancakes) or news forums. For private or commercial sales especially, you want as many eyeballs as possible. Am I correct in assuming that any general forum would be included as a part of each individual portal, so that any priuschatter would see all news items posted by anyone in any of the other portals? Would someone with multiple models be able to check off multiple portals to view at once (using VNP)? or would they go back to a common menu to jump in and out of the different portals?

    4. As I said in my original posting, I think there's a tremendous amount of synergy between the different models. Every other posting I've made on camrychat probably starts with "Well, in my Prius" or "Well on Priuschat.com". There's also a tremendous amount of synergy between the people that are buying hybrids of all different makes and models. Whether from the right or the left, there is common cause in reducing dependence on oil, reducing pollution through voluntary market forces, and embracing our inner geeks! :p Most of us have already learned way more about our cars than any sane non-mechanic ought to know, so I suspect coming to Priuschat for information about the Prius is not the sole reason a lot of diehards still visit every day. I think Danny should go for it, and the sooner the better! Is it even necessary to wait for the common login software update?

Danny, your plan appears very well worked out--a tribute to your skill as a webmaster.
I would only hope that the spirit of comradery in the present Prius group does not become diluted in the combining process. I think we have a great bunch of people here who have come to know and respect each other's viewpoints and personalities and I would hope to keep it that way.

I'll vote for the combined Hybrid site als long as there is some way to separate
the posts by car type (Prius, Highlander, etc.).

I do like having the Prius only information, but would like to get more involved
    in the overall Hybrid community.

Just think of it as the ultimate Prius modification! :D
It's a great way to get a smooth, straight ride, with fully adjustable, powered, heated, lumbar-supported leather seats, auto-headlights and auto-locks! :p

Danny: Of course they're your sites so in the end it's your decision. But personally, I am not much interested in information about other hybrids. Also, if Fred's is combined with the off-topic sections of the other sites, it is likely to have so many posters that it becomes impossible to keep up with.

There is a "sweet spot" for the number of posters in a forum. Too few and it's boring for lack of activity. But too many and there's no way to read all the posts even in a limited number of threads.

Already, I only visit 2 or 3 of the forums, and within those I only read 1/3 to 1/2 of the threads. If you quadruple the number of posters, my time could end up limiting me to reading only one thread. There would be attrition as others also find the new, expanded board too unwieldy, and you'd lose participants overall.
