I have a new '06 Prius with a little less than 500 mi on it. As I start the car and idle in Park, the gas engine turns on and eventually turns off. When it does, it makes these little jerks. In another case, I'm driving and coming to a complete stop. Both the gas and electric are on at the stop. As the gas engine shuts off, it makes an even larger more abrupt jerk. :(

Does it happen on your Prius as well? I went to the service center and they said that the idle jerks were normal. However, I couldn't recreate the larger jerk when I was with him. I really can't seem to remember it doing it on the 2 other Prii I test drove.

Any help will be much appreciated! btw, this is my first post. :) i love this site! I already shut off my Reverse beep thanks to you guys! 10q!!

normal. mine did it from day one...however, as you get more mileage on the vehicle...i noticed it will tend to "smooth"out a bit...but it will continue...actually i hardly even notice it now...

Less than 500 miles? Normal. It'll settle down in time, it's like taming a wild horse; it'll kick at first but eventually settle down. :)
    Just kidding.

I notice mine the most when it's cold outside. And sometimes when I have only been driving for a few minutes. But trust me, it'll calm down. Don't worry about it.

Normal...and the car never actually jerks forward...it just kinda shudders. So you don't have to worry about rolling to stop and then the car jerking forward a few feet.

You get used to it...and even kinda miss it when it starts to lessen after a few thousand miles.

Yeah my car "clunks" more when ICE is cold, much less after it warms up...glad to hear it will calms down with time, and that it is normal.

It can move a startling amount sometimes. I left my car running when adding air to the tires and it move forward a good inch or two. Enough to make me jump back when it did so since I was right at the tire.

I've only had it do this while in park with the car on and on level surface. When the ICE kicks in, it jumps a bit.

yeah I noticed mine doing that once or twice as well so I make sure to put my parking brake all the time. maybe if I change my tires, it'll stop moving so much?

I do not really think that changing the tires will help. The slight shift in movement is more pornounced only in the first few hundred miles. After about 1500 miles it becomes noticeably lesser.
Of course, if the place where u live in gets a lot of snow, you might consider changing to snow tires in winter. For now, the OEM tires should be fine. Do not let the jerking bother you too much. I have an '06 as well, and have just covered a little over 3800 miles on it. The shakes are hardly noticeable now.

hmm well i do definitely need snow tires in the winter. im thinking of changing the OEM tires once i have enough money. I felt like i was slipping and sliding in the rain the other day.

im glad to hear the shakes get better!!

Luna, I am having the same trouble and have less than 350 miles on my new priss. Does anybody have a clue why the first stop after start results in a two second hurdy gurdy dance by the shutdown of the combustion side of the hybrid drive?

Hello all. I bought a new 08 Prius last year. Ever since about after 400 miles or so I've noticed this shaking when the engine shuts off, like when a normal engine dies and shakes the car. I swear I never noticed it during the first 400 miles, when I was using the dealer's gas (did they put in an additive?). Since it was a new car and my first ever new car purchase, I would have noticed it while first driving it. I started to notice it around 500 miles. My area is moderate weather, 40-80 deg F right now.

But now I'm at around 5500 miles and the jumping is still there. Even if I drive for 45 minutes straight on the highway, then once I get to a light and the engine turns off, it jumps and shakes while doing so. I've heard it's normal and people here say it gets better, but I don't see any difference even over 5K miles. I guess it's something to do with the engine needing to burn out the residual gas?

Has anyone found a way or something to tweak or add to get rid of this? It's just one of those things that occasionally bugs me, and makes me feel awkward when I have passengers trying to explain why the car shakes when the engine turns off.

What you describe is normal. It happens more often with new engines and cold weather.

Yep. The engine is cleaning itself out and rotating itself to the optimal starting position.

When new, the "jerk" was very noticeable especially cold. After the first 8,000 km, the "jerk" became much less pronounced, and by the time my Prius had around 40,000 km on it, the only time it "jerked" was in very cold temps

Otherwise, with the winter front, I'd be on the highway at 110 km/h, at -30 C and colder, and when I finally came into the city at the first red light, the engine shutdown was just as smooth as summer

With use and some break-in the jerkiness goes away

It happens when the hybrid system is entering to stage 4. Once it is in stage 4, the shut down will be very smooth. If the ICE shut down "roughly" more than once in a row (without turning off), let us know.
