You should definately get an official letter from TMS...they're all almost exactly the same format and come from TMS in CA. In any case, if you're going in for an oil change/service whatever anyway and have the time I'd just call ahead and ask them to get your recall work done too....even if you haven't gotten the official letter. It'll be in their computer system if you need the work done.

I just called the 800 number and talked with a very helpful representative who I asked to check my early 2004 VIN # to see if I would be included in the recall . He said that mine is not scheduled in the recall. Now I can go on a driving vacation with some peace of mind. Hooray!

With hundreds of thousands of cars in the range, and not one single instance of an actual failure of the suspect part I drive in peace of mind regardless of whether my car is included.

At least, I have total peace of mind regarding the car. The other drivers out there are maniacs. You take you life in your hand whenever to travel anywhere by car, be it only a block, much less an extended trip. It's remarkable that people will totally disregard the enormous death rate from trafic accidents, but will freak out over a recall of a part that has never once failed yet.

dude... i've been trying to spread the word to NOT try to schedule your recall work yet. not all dealers have parts yet, not all of them know much about the details... there are THIRTY THREE PAGES of instructions for them to absorb... give them a bit.

Well...I didn't. I called them to see what it was about. Since I have not gotten an official letter..I was sceptical. So I called and they said they won't have parts till next week anyway.

DH works for the southeast toyota region, which isn't known for prompt dissemination of information. he ended up getting the repair info via fax from the toyota rep who posts here on the board, then sharing it with the other techs at the shop. (it finally showed up in their TIS on tuesday) then he went over to parts and got them going on ordering the steering parts they needed. that's the ONLY reason the dealership is going to be ready for this within the next couple of days.

i think many other places are way behind.

The letter upon which to rely will come from Toyota HQ--Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc.

With consumer-generated media and active forum sites like this, we're getting information into the hands of consumers faster than ever. But SSCs and the like still follow a traditional and often regulated communications protocol that dictates when a particular service action can and need be completed. We've not sent the first customer letter yet, and not all of our Toyota dealerships--including our corporate vehicle services center--are ready to start the work. (I tried to get mine done last week during its first maintenance service.)

Letters start mailing Monday, and the campaign work should be underway at our dealerships shortly after that.

I too have gotten multiple "fake" recall labeled envelopes from Tustin Toyota which was nothing more than an advertising flyer inside before this steering recall event. Reminds me, they lied about getting free tickets to the Long Beach Grand Prix too after getting service.. :p

    Anyways wait, as TMS says.

This is helpful info. Living in the same area, I actually get the same. These often take the form of bonafide service promotions that are meant to hopefully momentarily escape the recycle bucket by appearing to be "official." (Consumer Reports regularly publicizes this tired marketing gimmick on their back page.)

I'll forward your comments to our LA Region customer services group. Thanks.

apologies for the horrible quality... his mom is borrowing our digital camera so i took the pic with my phone camera.

here's the part that's being replaced in the vast majority of cars affected by the recall. the plan is for DH to do ours tomorrow morning. there are 2 differences, listed on the pic. sorry if it's hard to see

okay... ours already had the end piece the way it should be, just the sleeve is stronger.

again, bad picture from camera phone, but here's what i could get.

    [attachmentid=3768]

old on the left, new on the right. hard to see, but that sleeve is definitely thicker.

actually not that hard of a job to do, he didn't have any trouble at all. real quick job too.

Just wait for the letter. Your car might not even be one of the affected ones.

What bothers me is the utter lack of information on which cars are affected. There doesn't seem to be anything that they can tell us that gives us a clue as to whether or not our specific cars are involved. Were the parts that need to be replaced in a bad batch that were sent all over the place so that the defective ones were put in randomly? Damn, this is annoying.

 You mean, except for the letter you can expect to receive from Toyota telling you if your car is affected.

Received my notification for SSC 60C in the mail yesterday.
It says they will replace the Steering Intermediate Shaft.
They will also inspect the sliding yoke and intermediate extension shaft and replace as necessary.
I have a MY 2004 that I took delivery on in the first week of April in 2004.
I'm getting new Michelin HydroEdge tires installed today at Costco, so I'll set up an appointment with my Dealer later.

Do they have to reset the VSC steering wheel center point?
