Prius C Engine = Gen 1 Prius

Toyota claims 70% of the parts have had some change, but yes, it is the same engine as the Gen 1 and 2 Prius, so it is a well proven, reliable engine.

 

I will also be a Prius newbie when my C finally arrives so what is the difference between the Prius Gen 1/2 engine and the Gen III?

 

The Gen I/II (and the "C") use the 1.5 liter Atkinson cycle engine whereas the Gen III uses a 1.8 liter Atkinson cycle engine. Both have proven highly reliable and efficient.

Prius c engine compression ratio is the highest so far. It was bumped to 13.4 from 13.0.

Prius c engine warms up faster as it was designed to be a city car with many short trips. A lot of engineering efforts were put in to achieve 50 MPG in the real-world with a smaller battery pack.

 

Yes, even with the ICE idling and doing what it does....
it still uses gas as thrifty as can be....like lawn mower.
AND you can speed up pretty fast if needed, and barely touts the mpg.

I have noticed this between the 3G and C.
My C warms up and shuts down very shortly after I take off in the morn.
But I hit stop lights, and then gas it and it kicks on again, but shuts down if I let off the gas.
My '12 P3 on the other hand, the ICE will run for 3-5 times for a few minutes each. after I start (even in warmer weather)
Still gets over 50 avg. no issues there!

The improvements to the 1NZ-FXE engine are quite significant in the Prius c over the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Priuses.

Even more significant is the Gen 3-type HSD, in which there is a compound gear and a second planetary gear for the MG2, and which allows for a 2.5 times increase in MG2 speed, relative to MG1, and, thereby, the MG2 to be as small in cross-section as the MG1, thereby saving considerable space.

This update is, at some level, in all 2010 and later Priuses, including the Prius c.

Also, a change was made in the lubrication system to use ATF-WS.

The 2016 and later Priuses, but not the Prius c, have a further redesigned HSD (Gen 4), and which further improves the efficiency of the HSD.

 

Correct me if I'm wrong but if the 2015 Prius C has the same engine as the Gen 1 Prius, then... The 2015 Prius C has an engine that was developed approximately 19 years ago? To me, that is kind of a bummer. I was thinking it would be newer and slicker, maybe an engine developed 5 years ago... But oh well. I still love my C no matter how old the engine tech is!

 

If you buy a Lamborghini, the engine was first developed in 1964. A Corvette engine traces its origins to 1955. Toyota still sells cars with the A engine, designed in 1978. The 1.8 liter Prius engine is 10 years old.

Refinement of a design is not all bad. The Gen 1 had a redline of 4500 RPMs, Gen 2 5000 RPMs, The c has no specified redline but owners have not reported RPMs above 4900.
