Fundamentalist religious groups issued a statement today saying that the world will be threatened by peace and prosperity unless ways can be found to increase hate and anger.

"While we have made a lot of progress in the past few years in reducing tolerance and encroaching on science and reason we must constantly remind ourselves just how far we have to go. On the plus side, fear and paranoia have never been stronger, especially in the United States. The situation in Iraq, in particular is bright for us. We can look forward to many more years of a stupid and useless quagmire there in an ugly scramble for the world's remaining oil. A serious threat looms if resources are diverted from the war into the development of renewable sources of energy, but we are confident that science education in the U.S. will be sufficiently undermined that Americans will have no alternative but to fight for every last drop of holy oil. If we succeed in banning abortion, then contraception will be next and we can look forward to a world population of 15 or 20 billion souls, all needing our spiritual care." Let us pray.

I see quote marks, but no reference.

Who are you presuming to quote?

Now that the poppy farmers in Afghanistan have gone back to work, opium is the opium of the masses.

This would be very funny if it were not so true.

Come on now, Tony, surely you know better than this. That half-quote has been taken out of context so often that it's really quite pathetic.

Remember that in Marx's day, the deleterious effects of opium were not well understood. It was thought by many to be a cure for despondency. The full quote shows that Marx thought religion was a good thing (I disagree with him on that). It was only organized religion, as a tool for oppressing the people, that he opposed.

Of course, Marx wrote in German, but basically what he said was:

"Religion is the opiate of the people: the heart of a heartless world."

Leave off the second half of the sentence and you reverse the meaning of what he said; a typical tactic of conservatives and Bible-thumpers.

"Imagine: you are a foot soldier in a paramilitary group whose purpose is to remake America as a Christian theocracy, and establish its worldly vision of the dominion of Christ over all aspects of life. You are issued high-tech military weaponry, and instructed to engage the infidel on the streets of New York City. You are on a mission - both a religious mission and a military mission -- to convert or kill Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, gays, and anyone who advocates the separation of church and state - especially moderate, mainstream Christians. Your mission is "to conduct physical and spiritual warfare"; all who resist must be taken out with extreme prejudice. You have never felt so powerful, so driven by a purpose: you are 13 years old. You are playing a real-time strategy video game whose creators are linked to the empire of mega-church pastor Rick Warren, best selling author of The Purpose Driven Life.

The game, slated for release by October 2006 in advance of the Christmas shopping rush, has been previewed at video game exhibitions, and reviewed by major newspapers and magazines. But until now, no fan or critic has pointed out the controversial game's connection to Mr. Warren or his dominionist agenda."

This came from the site, TALK TO ACTION about this new video game based on the "Left Behind" series of books.

As with all religions there seems to be a real disconnect between the orginal teachings and what certain organized groups what to push through to advance their own agenda.

I always find it interesting that you cannot find any real world quotes from Christian leaders that actually support the numerous examples of this kind of "sarcasm".

I suppose if you tell yourself something is true, and then you make up quotes that support your view, you amass enough "evidence" in your head to convince you that it is, indeed, true.

Being a Christian, I'm always amused at the beliefs people ascribe to me.

Actually, Daniel, I just threw it out there because it the mood just hit me. :) By the way, did you click the link after my name? If it doesn't work the first time, you might need to hit it a few more times.

Honestly, I didn't know about the second half of the quote. I haven't read any Karl Marx to have speak of. Other than his Manifesto, that is. But that was when I was in Junior High and I can't be expected to remember anything that long ago.

Yeah, nobody knows about the second half, because they just accept the lies that the anti-communist crusaders put out from the 1920's to the present. Wanting to understand what the guy really said, I read both volumes of Capital when I was in my 20's, and everything of Engels I could get my hands on.

Another example of similar propaganda is the famous quote from Khrushchev: "We will bury you," which sounds like a threat to kill us, but in the original Russian is nothing more than a brag that Soviet style communism would outlive capitalism.

We have something in common: I am amused (and, I admit, often upset) by the views that christians and creationists ascribe to me.

I went to Catholic schools in Chicago from 1953 - 1966. Believe me, we learned about them "godless communists" before we learned to "Duck'n'Cover"!
