Why should I pick the Gen 4 over a Chevy Volt?

    A BMW PHEV would be the worst money pit that money can buy you. Chevy has had Reliability issues for along time. They got help from Toyota to improve thier production quality standards.

    i have owned many chevy and toyota cars and trucks,,owned a used car lot for years. drive many many different cars,, chevy vs toyota reliability,, NOT EVEN IN THE SAME BALLPARK. toyota waaaayy,, beter. thats my ,real world ,anicdotal,"know a guy"first hand,etc humble opinion.

    I agree w moon monkey that historically Chevy reliability is nothing compared to Toyota. Is the rumor true that Prius was rated most reliable car ever made?

    I've test driven the volt on a curvy road. It wags it's tail like there's 500 lbs loose in the trunk. Seriously it's that God awful. Scary actually. If u don't drive fast in turns then you'll never notice it and u won't care either. Note that you don't have to drive this like a performance car to see it's deficits. I'm just talking spirited country road driving. The volt is downright scary. It wags it's tail so bad it scares me.

    I Prius camp at the track. I race bikes and this is an air-conditioned tent with no mosquitoes. Damp items dry out and I'm comfy on an air mattress that fits perfectly if twin size. This also works when at the Bmw motorcycle rally in January. Others freeze in their tents. I'm toasty warm. Does a twin mattress fit in a Volt? Try it and see how it goes between the shock towers.

    I find when the volt is driven aggressively it goes into safety mode and limits max speed to 80mph. I imagine if pulling a trailer the same would happen. I'd essentially be riding the limp mode governor. I can't imagine driving that slow w a trailer.

    I routinely drive at triple digits. Wish the Prius did more than 108 constant pace. It tops out at 116 but it's not sustainable once the battery depletes. I find in cold weather I can sustain 112. Wish the Prius had more power but I find that a justified compromise, not a shortcoming. if u live somewhere that doesn't support these speeds then the 100 limit of the volt may not matter to u...but it does to me.

    Does this clarify why the volt is crap compared to Prius MrMischief? And calling me homeless because I think your beloved car is crap compared to a Prius is a cheap shot, and an inaccurate one at that. Definitely not homeless. Just think the volt doesn't compare to a Prius in performance and versatility. So keep your insults to yourself MrMischief.

    I don't appreciate the misdirected insult. Calling people I n this forum trolls is inappropriate and not becoming of a forum member just because you don't agree with them. And speaking politics here is likely to draw hatred towards you. Not smart my friend!

    On this list (admittedly first I found when I searched "most reliable car ever made) 4 GM products, no Toyota although 2 Lexus.

    This is exactly how I felt with the Prius, and I have other posts on here about it. Strange. I feel the Prius is down right scary at anything higher than the speed limit and it's the first vehicle I've ever owned where I pay close attention to the recommended speeds in turns. I've had it checked out and drove another one, it's nothing wrong with my car. The Volt I drove felt much more planted and controlled through the turns compared to the 2016 Prius. I'm assuming the previous model Prius handle much worse than mine due to the rear suspension design but I have never driven one other than around the block once.

    To me if I can sleep inside of a car or not is irrelevant because it just seems like a very strange thing to do when I own camping gear. I suppose if I couldn't afford a tent.... Sort of the same as using a Prius (or Volt) to tow with when I own a truck. Maybe if I limited myself to one or two vehicles it would be an issue and suddenly it'd make sense but I'd probably still buy a car that met all of my needs better.

    Where are you finding 100+ mph speed limits on a regular basis? The only place in the country I know of where that used to be legally ok-ish was Montana but they did away with their reasonable and prudent law and they've replaced it with an 80 mph limit.

    Not really. I'm curious if the Volt you drove was broken or had bald tires or something. The camping thing we're just going to have to disagree on because it makes no sense to me. Unless you're driving cross country and you suddenly find yourself too tired to drive before your next stop, then I can understand sleeping in your car. But actually planning to sleep in the car just seems very strange to me. If I came upon a Prius parked somewhere with a dude sleeping in it I'd probably ask if you needed help or if you had a pot outside I'd leave a few bucks in it.

    I'm saying sleeping in your car, any car, is something I think of only homeless people doing. I'm not saying that you must be homeless because you prefer the Prius over the Volt (hey! guess which one I bought?). But if you're really that butt hurt about it I suggest you make a sign and go protest. #notmypriuschat may not be taken yet.

    What?!?! there might be bias in reporting? :)

    In general I expect Toyota to be the most reliable vehicle you can buy, and it's a big reason I bought the Prius. That said I don't know if you can point to any manufacturer today and say that they are just crap. When you think about the 70s and 80s, even into the 90s, to today.... vehicles are so much better than they used to be from a reliability stand point. But I did buy a Toyota and I expect to never do any real work to it. But we'll see.... currently when I turn it on the infotainment screen comes on then goes black. If I touch "home" it comes back on and stays on with everything normal. But only the "home" button seems to wake it up. It's going to the dealer today to be looked at and this is officially now more trips to the dealer than I expected it to need in 200,000+ miles. Owned it since May, just bout to hit 10,000 miles. My guess is that this is some software snafu and they'll "reset it" then see if it happens again.

    Most likely, the list on cnet is based off of consumer reports though. That's unfortunate regarding the software bug, I think Toyota is good at building cars but suck at coding good infotainment systems, wish they just used google car platform.

    As the saying goes the grass looks greener on the other side. I am sure Volt has it's own share of issues, and problems.

    I view CR as biased as well, particularly in cars. It's something I look at but I no longer subscribe partly because I didn't find that the product they recommended always worked so well for me. When making a large purchase I still consider CR but I no longer use them as the deciding factor.

    Back to cars, I do subscribe to TrueDelta. They have an interesting idea, but a bit flawed because it depends on owners to respond. For example if you take all of their years of data Ram and Smart are the two most reliable brands. My ram isn't bad, but it has had some things on it that I felt were a bit early. Minor stuff like I found the front right shock leaking around 60,000 miles. but still things I think should have lasted longer. I've heard Smart has terrible reliability so I was surprised to see it so low on the list. Toyota is third on their list at 28 repairs per 100 cars per year, but they have a huge range from 0 to 87. Worst on their list in Oldsmobile but it looks like they have very little data for it, second worst is Cadillac at 71 repairs per 100 cars per year with their range going from 36 to over 120. Clearly there are both good and bad models within each brand.

    The most reliable model per truedelta is the 2011 - 2014 Nissan Juke. Least reliable is the 2014 - 2016 BMW i3 followed by the 2015 - 2016 Lincoln MKC, then 2012-2016 tesla model S, then 2014-2016 Jaguar F-Type. The 2012 - 2015 Prius is ranked 5th most reliable, but all other model years are quite a bit lower on the list (with the exception of the 2016 which is not yet rated). Worst Toyota is the 2013-2015 Avalon which is rated worse than a Land Rover LR4 and only slightly better than the Dodge Dart.
