So what are the regulations? How loud? What kind of noise? Must it be intrusive to the inside of the cabin?

    bad article/reporting...

If you squish somebody's kid in a parking lot - the growler had BETTER be functional. :p

The only good thing is the standard requires the noise to be heard outside of the cabin. How I hate the back-up beep.

Now make a battery operated one we can carry around, put on bicycles, skate boards, or toddlers and teenagers.

i was driving thru a small parking lot at 2 mph this morning. guy comes out of a building about 20' on my right, proceeds to walk right in front of me across the lot. never looked left or right.
    i don't think it's going to help.

One nice point when I collected new Prius last Tuesday, the dealer had changed the reversed to just one beep without me having to ask. Apparently most customers request it anyway, at least that's what he said.

I'm still smiling over here. My CRV gave 33 mpg and after 250 miles Prius is averaging 66.7 mpg

I'm not an engineer, so does my spaceship sounding 2012 PiP meet the new standard? Like bisco, I continually have sighted people ( I know this because most of them are looking at their phones and/or have no white cane or seeing-eye dog) walk in front of me in parking lots. OTOH, a fellow in my neighborhood uses both a dog and a white cane, and they seem to pay attention to all vehicles.

Sure, sure. I can see a vehicle drive down the residential street at 40km/h and I still don't hear it coming. Not that I think the noisemaker will help but I'm just saying, if they're not paying attention, then there's nothing you can do (other than continued education at the kindergarten level... and apparently at the university level too)

The original law was an initiative of Bush II administration supported by unusually weak data: http://hiwaay.net/~bzwilson/prius/Prius_Fatal_Accidents .

The blind think this will make them safer but the statistical analysis is unusually weak. Worse, there is no 'sunset' to evaluate the effect of the law versus the wide spread adoption of TSS-P and equivalent systems that alert and often brake for pedestrians. After 2019, the world has become a little noisier for at most a marginal good.

Personally, I think this was the last gasp of gasser management to put a burden on the Prius that was selling well in 2009. These same auto manufacturers, 10 years later, are (were?) facing mandates, certainly in CARB states, to sell their own EVs, plug-ins, hybrids, and auto-stop cars.

UK Gen4s don't seem to come with any warning sound at low speed for pedestrians. On a daily basis, I am having to honk the horn to let pedestrians know that I'm a car that is travelling at low speed and they need to pay attention. Last night, a pedestrian got so angry, they punched the rear of my car.

Last week, I met my manager in the parking lot as he was exiting his car. My Prius was running on battery and he said he did not hear the noisemaker in my 2017 Prius. :sneaky:

I actually turned the volume up on my noisemaker, as well as enabled it in whenever the car is in a gear, rather than just park moving.

It's quite audible from outside, or if I've got the window open in a drive through, now.
