    Hi everyone,

I have a 2005 Prius and just within the last month noticed sort of a loud vibrating noise within the tire area. Just got back from getting the oil changed and they said it looks like the right front wheel bearing needs replaced. The quote was $446.67 ($199.99 for parts, $192 for labor, $23.52 for shop supplies and $31.16 for tax). Does this seem about right? High? Low? The noise only started becoming more audible within the last month? Thank you in advance for any advice!

I just had one done on a 06. I bought the part at Advance Auto Parts for about $110. It's made by Moog. You can order online and use a coupon code from retmenot.com for $40 off. I think it was around $150 before discount. It's the whole hub assembly so just about any mechanic can install that in about an hour. I think I paid around $180 parts and labor total.

If you are going to have "any mechanic" install the hub, ask that person to disconnect the 12V battery before starting work, to avoid inducing DTC in the skid control ECU. Vibration and mechanical shock at the disc caliper can result in DTC being logged.

I never have seen a DTC in the skid control. I wired the caliper and rotor together and hung it from the spring with another wire. Worked well.

Labor inflation is rampant. Had both front wheel bearings replaced on my 2005 at the stealer today. The hub assemblies were $207.97 each so not too bad. The labor for the replacement and alignment was $867.95. Total incIuding 2 oil filters was $1321.47. I thought that was high so I called the other local dealer and they were higher becuase they were not running a specal on the alignment.

I have 232K miles and this is the first time the front wheeel bearings have been changed. I am in the Kansas City Missouri metro area.

Had the left bearing done 2 years ago for $495 parts & labor at 185,000 miles. Having the right one done tomorrow for the same price at 216,000 miles.

I now have 160K miles on the old 05. I have started to hear that old lonesome whine on the left side of the front. It is pretty obvious at 65 mph. I am considering replacing both front wheel bearings. But I want to know what you all think about replacing just one? I had another car that had a bad right rear bearing. I replaced all four of them at the time. But that may have been a bit premature. Thoughts?

There is no savings in labor effort by doing both, vs. one at a time. Hence if you wish to save some money, just replace the failed bearing.

I replaced the wheel bearing. But the noise is still there. My MPH has not improved either.

Took my Prius to Molle in 2013 for drivers side bearing replacement. Was $602 total ($100 part, $500 labor).
